  • Hard News: With regard to place,

Took a ride with a Hamilton friend on Sunday, in light rain, before we set off to see Clara Bow at The Civic* Initially took a right at the Alford Street bridge and travelled as far as we could go (even skirted a barrier or two) but wished we could go further. Retraced 0ur route and circled above the tunnel and set out along the NW path to Te Atatu. Great riding along the fringes of the estuary and spotting the bird life. We will return once it is all finished.
*'As The It Girl in "It", with the Auckland Philharmonia and 2000+ happy patrons, Pretty saucy for a 1927 silent movie!

oh, if only my daughter was over K pop! When she was home last, before she set off for Japan and was playing relentless K pop, Josephine had to have a quiet word with her for the sake of my sanity.
I favour my iPod, with top quality earbuds, and was a little dumbfounded when someone referred to it as 'old-fashioned technology' recently. On occasion, I drag out my HMV portable gramophone and play a 78 from my garage sale-acquired collection of 1930/4os jazz,

  • Hard News: That escalated quickly ..., in reply to Lynn Yum,

And the polls can’t be telling the whole picture, given that the polls were dead wrong with Brexit, Trump, and last the UK election”.

Yes, whilst pollsters continue to rely on landline responses. This effectively precludes 90% of my students from taking part and an increasing number of older friends.y

  • Hard News: With regard to place,

Must bring my bike up this weekend and go for a spin.
I told a story when I was chatting with Jesse M on Bookmarks last week, about the crushing rejection of my bid to join a local social cycling group because I have an ebike. Said it felt a bit like when Dylan went electric (smiles)!

Yes, it was good. Maybe they could rename it 'Poor man's cannabis'?

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Remembering Roi,

A bit off the track but I did a Bookmarks session on RNZ with Jesse Mulligan yesterday, found at http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoons/audio/201852471/bookmarks-with-geoff-lealand
Didn't get a chance to play all the music I had lined up (Elbow, The Felice Brothers) but I did get Al Green's "Belle" in there.

I like the little of Bressa Creeting Cake I have heard but they must qualify for The Worst Band Name Ever Award.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: a New Zealand story,

Thanks, Ian. That should be 'Hawera'.

Saw The Bads at the excellent Nivara Lounge in Hamilton this evening. They were very good.

  • Hard News: Our own fake news,

Thanks for this, Russell. I will use it in my first year Media Cultures course* as their first blog task is to identify an item of fake news and track it back to its origin (as you have done).
Every man and woman and dog engaged in teaching is doing something about fake news at the moment but it is important work.

    * the last time ever I will teach this course.
