  • Hard News: Memories of the news,

Being woken by my mother, to be told that JFK had been assassinated.
In respect of upcoming events, I think I will need to hide away, far from the reach of any media, when the Queen dies.

I have to admit to submitting the question about Chris Bishop’s political affiliation!

It was a very enjoyable event and having Julia Deans singing was special,

  • Speaker: The Government lost the election,

    Attachment

On the topic of political change, I came across the above (rather sad) letter whilst I was continuing to empty and abandon my university office today. It is dated not long after Lange resigned from Parliament.

  • Hard News: Media Take: The Future,

kia ora Russell; Media Take, and Media 3 before it, offered unique opportunities to introduce some of my students to the process of making television, as well as encountering intelligent discussions on important issues. They all enjoyed our occasional jaunts up SH1 to Hobson Street and were always treated with kindness in the studio.

But no more Media Take and no more opportunities to take students on such trips (I finish with the univ on Nov 3).

Thank you Russell, Toi and Phil.

    nga mihi nui

  • Hard News: Music: Places to Play,

    Reel People--Poster for Lealand.pdf

Not quite music but Christchurch folk (Rob, Ian, David et al) might be interested in an interesting 30minute film I co-produced this year, which screens at the UoC (Lecture Theatre A9) on Tuesday Oct 17 at 12 noon. I will be there, to introduce it and answer any and all questions.
The film is "The Reel People of New Zealand" (Nick Homler, 2017); a homage to independent/art house cinemas in New Zealand, as seen through the eyes of a young American film-maker. Alice in Videoland and Christchurch features! It first screened on Doc Edge 2017, in Auckland and Wellington.

  • Speaker: Polling 2017: life beyond landlines?, in reply to Gavin White,

But it is still not clear how random sampling is possible.

I tend to adopt a policy of deliberate peversity with online polls, especially when I encounter badly-worded questions or opaque agendas. It is so easy to lie online and disrupt the conceits of algorithms eg according to Facebook, I was born in 1910.
But I am generally more interested in the politics of research than in research for the purpose of politics.

  • Speaker: Polling 2017: life beyond landlines?,

I am just wondering how you do a random sample online. It seems like an impossible proposition, unless you have some kind of membership/meta list to select from.
Given there is no equivalent telephone directory for mobiles, even CATI is increasingly fragile, and possibly even fraudulent. Polling should be an industry in decline, rather than ascendance.
