Thank you for these thoughts, Russell. I rather regret that I have drifted away from PA, when it once used to be an important part of my online life. I recently read an interesting book ‘Online Afterlife’ and I must not let this site become one of my digital ghosts.
It was an interesting end to a vexatious year; the most unusual moment was when we sat on a Northland beach, under a pohutakawa in full bloom, and watched a live stream of our daughter Catherine Rose marrying her Japanese boyfriend Kaggy in an anonymous office in Tokyo, Lots of signing of forms and stamping by a fellow who looked rather like a janitor.
Regarding the NZ response to the pandemic: I am contributing to a book on children’s experiences of COVID and it is very tempting to celebrate the NZ experience, especially when I also need to comment on the response in countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Australia. But I do feel proud to be a New Zealander.
Good that Fiona is now ebike ready; I am attempting to persuade Josephine to get one, Did some great riding up in Northand in December.

Great stuff, Joshua. I helped with Jamie Strange’s campaign in Hamilton East and it quickly became apparent that there was little desire for any power returning to the Nats. Both Hamilton electorates are now Labour-held, and this follows on from last year’s local body election, where a bunch of reactionaries were turfed out.

Many thanks, Ross. This is helpful.

Just a quick question (this seems an appropriate place to post it):
A lovely bloke and former work colleague emailed me yesterday, with rather terrible news about the diagnosis of an intensifying medical condition. He has been diagnosed with onset of motor neurone disease.
In his message, he asked if he could ‘commission’ me to grow cannabis in our garden (it is a very fertile garden and I spend many hours working in it). I think he is seeking a legitimate source for medical cannabis but I also think his request was serious.
What would be the legality of such a venture? Still illegal but could change under proposed legislation? All advice would be welcomed. -
Russell; have you noticed these bullshit spam messages infiltrating the conversation?

We have been considering Devs, given Garland’s earlier work. But for something completely different, I really recommend Shtisel, an Israeli series on Netflix. It is centred on an ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem, and one particular family and one particular father and son relationship (Shukem and Akiva). It is absorbing and often funny, and very, very human.
We have watched the 12 episodes of series one and are mid-way through series two. Series three is in production. -
Good to have you on The Panel today, Russell. But I wish Wallace would bluster less.
