  • Hard News: F**kin' Choice,

The moment of Van and Munter constructing a garden shed was a gem. True Blood was pretty magnificent last night too--I always suspected there was something dodgy about Renee, the faux-Cajun character. But I can't bear to think that Lafayette (my favourite character) has come to a sticky end.

I have started distributing notices about Media 7 to our media teachers list, so there should be an increase in the viewing figures(not that Nielsen would notice, though!)

I will actually show you the door. It is my house.

And we all recognise and respect that as guests--sitting around in Russell's spacious lounge, conversing in a civilised fashion. So, we don't want folk who are off doing something vile in a back room.

I would have made a similar point, but I have been busy in the Public Library re-titling the books in the Crime section: Unlawful Killing on the Orient Express; Murder, She Alleged; and so on.

Excellent! There could be more: An Untimely Demise Wish; Passed Away and the Maiden; Dail M for a Criminal Proceedings

more of a Gen X love-in than a forum for honest debate.

Enough of the caricatures! PA discussions are amongst the most honest I have encountered in my life, in terms of correcting you if you are wrong, and in thwarting attempts to use the discussion to personalise or intimidate.
There may be some sort of agreement or consensus about a number of things ie the world could be a better place than it currently is; we have a duty to counter mis-information and manipulation; technology and science is generally a good thing etc . If you don't believe in these things, there are plenty of other places on the Web..

You cannot seriously be putting skinheads and nazis in the same boat as pro life groups, can you?

Yes, in numerous cases, I would.

Why don't you bugger off and annoy some other blog, Grant.

But there isn't any point to my rant, because everyone who watches 'reality television' is stupid, and all the shows are crap. I keep being told this, over and over, so it must be true.

May I reassure you Danielle, that you certainly aren't! "Reality TV" is one of those lazy descriptions used to dismiss a huge range of television sub-genres--from Pioneer House to NZ's Next Top Model.

As far as Susan Boyle is concerned, I think it is much less to do with television than the venial and vile red-top British press, (The Sun in particular) who once again are displaying their finely-honed hypocrisy.

  • Field Theory: Kicking the underdog,

Yes, it was a rough Sunday morning. We gathered, with friends, for a cooked breakfast and a delayed broadcast of the Super 14 final. Unfortunately, I had already heard the result on the 8am NatRadio news (where it appeared as an after-thought), so it was a bit difficult to feign excitement. General agreement on switching off at around the 60 minute mark.

I wonder if it would have different if Sitivatu and Leonard had been playing, and de Malmache hadn't gone off. Maybe not much difference!

Managing to initially mishear the lyrics of Annie's Song as let me drown in your bathtub has gifted me with a lifelong resistance to John Denver

My favourite story is Tom Waits recalling how his long-time partner Kathleen Brennan used to mis-hear "There's a bad moon a-rising" as "There's a bathroom on the right".

Completely off topic but I have started writing a paper today, for the Future of Journalism conference at the Cardiff School of Journalism (Wales) in September. The title is "Will Media Studies be the salvation of journalism?".

Pithy comments, startling insights and old-timey wisdom welcomed--either here or via my email address <Lealand@waikato.ac.nz>

I am so annoyed with EC

What's he done now? I can pretty much excuse him anything, if I get a dose of "Alibi" (off 'When I Was Cruel") first.
