  • Hard News: Apple-pie Embedding,

But are there really only two female muppets, one of them largely speechless?

    What about the chickens?

2.30 is good for me. I may well travel up for the Friday night do and sleep over, at a friends or under a bridge...

I would travel up SH1 for such an opportunity. If you can't find a copy of Peter's doco, I could check in our departmental library. If it isn't there, I could ask Peter if he has a copy (he teaches summer school at Waikato)

According to my diary, the Great Blend Christmas Party is Friday December 4--so would it be Saturday the 5th?

  • Hard News: The March for Democracy,

Cripes, what a discussion! I have been busy all day, running an oral examination* via video conference for my PhD student in Seattle and I have only just got to PA. What a mix of insights and fruit-loopness--and what a turn-up for the books, in that I can no longer dislike Deborah C. like I used to.

    * I wish they would give a different name as it suggests something vile and dental.

Malcolm, when are you going to write a history of the Civic? I recall the Peter Well's doco but a book is also needed.

the way the average man was being made a criminal for smacking his own child.

What 'average man"? In New Zealand, it is illegal to inflict violence on animals. So are children a lower form of life, sort of 'homo whack'ems'?

Is it just me who thinks the majority of letters written to NZ national newspapers are from diagnosed mental patients

As a very occasional Letter to the Editor writer, I do think you have to be a little crazy. I guess LtotheE writers are souls who haven't yet discovered the blogosphere.

  • Busytown: A turn-up for the books,

So Auckland Uni gets Witi's royalties and pays him a salary in return?

I shouldn't think. The formula my university works (and I suspect others do the same) is that you can earn up to 10% of your salary from other income sources. Not that there is any way of verifying nor monitoring this.

I wonder, for example, about all the $$$ Dennis Dutton must have earned from Arts & Letters Daily, when most of his contribution was probably done in university time.

  • Up Front: I'll Take Actium and Trafalgar,

makes me think that humanity is incurably horrible and we are all doomed to endless evil and entropy. Jesus fuck.

I know what you mean and I sometimes feel like that too--most recently, when I read a series The Guardian published about the events leading up to WWII. It was a sickening tale of cruelty, death and deceit and little to be proud of. Nevertheless, a greater danger is complete despair about humanity and the yearning for it all to end, as in the nihilistic world view of fundamentalists of all varieties. So, even though I sometimes agree with Sartre's dictum "Hell is other people" , the reality is that some people are hell but even more are heavenly.
