They were probably trying hard not to laugh.
Or processing their invoices?
Incidentally, Brenda, I greatly appreciated your attack on the implausibility of TV ratings at the SPADA debate.

if I started a PA book club, would anybody come?
I quite fancy a Magazine Club. I would travel some distance to share the pleasure of a good piece from the Atlantic or Vanity Fair or The Word.

What I'm not looking forward to hearing in the next eight months is the passive aggressive resentment of rugby from some NZ soccer fans
Well put! I have noticed amongst some colleagues that following soccer serves as some point of difference; as an expression of an anti-rugby sentiment.

What they don't tell you is that in the A League 88 of those emotions are subtle variations on boredom and despair.
Which could be why what goes on in the crowd is often more interesting than what happens on the pitch? You have to do something to occupy the time, as the ball goes back-and-forth, back-and-forth and no goals are coming? I agree that the Wellington crowd was a very jolly lot but I have seen too many ugly soccer crowds in my life.
In Cardiff, they don't sell alcohol in the Millennium Stadium but turn the city into a giant booze zone (mobile booze barns on every corner). The city looks like a war zone after the event. But they do sell alcohol in the ground for rugby matches, which sort of says something?

I have put in my order. Any thoughts on the SPADA conference, Russell? Matthew Weiner was tremendous, but so were the team from The WotWots.

My copy arrived this morning. 'round 11am, I dropped a gob of avacado on it but, as promised, it was removed without leaving a stain. Not sure it the same would happen for page 15 or 57.

And my small claim to fame
And mine is that Josh Sole, who was subbed on to play for Italy vs the ABs used to be one of my students. I wonder what had happened to him, after he had played a couple of games for Waikato.
I watched the soccer but still can't warm to a game where you can kick a ball around for 90 minutes, to end up with a 1-0 result (or just as often, a 0-0 outcome). Where is NZ ranked in the world?

It's the claim that he got "celebrity justice" and the unbelievably confused editorial that tried to make an issue of it.
Point taken! I wonder if it is time for newspapers to dispense with editorials and abandon the pretense that there is difference between such columns, and the remainder of news content. Good on you for reading them, though.

Hmm. If the fines were for something more profound than illegal parking--civil disobedience rather than yellow line violation-- I might be more sympathetic. I recall, in an earlier life, when I was a postie in Wellington, delivering registered letters for parking fines to Mike Bungay QC at least twice a week (of course he never collected them). People thought he was a rebel; I thought he was an a-hole.

Whilst we are on good things, it was a bloody good Media 7 last night--even if times it threatened to turn into The Jo Cotton Show. I know it will be used by teachers, especially in girls' schools.
