Good on you, Damion. The new website for NAME (National Association of Media Educators) is in the offing (and looking good) and it would be highly appropriate to have visible links to your project.

Generally, I like our sense of modesty. I tell the tale of flying a flag above my small office corner whilst I was studying in the US in the 1980s. It was a way of making a point in a land where the American flag was everywhere. It was only after a year or so that I realised it was the Australian flag I was displaying. I was mortified but it was also an acknowledgement that patriotic displays were rare at that time.
There have been times when media-generated rah-rah in NZ have turned my stomach, such as the America's Cup, when we were supposed to support a faux-Team New Zealand, which was much more about corporate indulgence. Also, as Finlay Macdonald commented recently, the way the NZ media roll over and wave their legs in the air when British royalty hoves into view.

Some aspects of this Anzac have been bloody awful, such as the parade of Jackson's war toys and Soviet Brutalism statues at Te Papa, but one good thing today was seeing a restored print of Jean Renoir's anti-war film The Grand Illusion (1937), as part of the French Film Festival.

Hard News: Friday Music: Record Store…, in reply to
I have been to the Tuning Fork a couple of times (most recently for C W
Stoneking). It is a good venue to hear music but the crowd can be distracting, with all the toing-and-froing by blokes who don't seem able to listen to music without a beer clutched in their sweaty hands. -
Phoenix Foundation. I usually hate novelty songs (remind me too much of commercial radio dickheads) but this is fun, and all in a good cause.
After hearing a radio interview with Anthonie Tonnon (what an intelligent interview !) I ordered a CD of Successor, -
I went out for an hour or so (to see a new NZ film called Jake at the Tivoli in Cambridge) after the South African innings, as I was not feeling confident. But I was back for the final hour, which was enthralling.

Hard News: Villainy and engagement, in reply to
But only we can devise something better than the deeply flawed and deceitful Peoplemeter measurement, and the even worse radio ratings sweeps.

Yes, Julie Christie can be held culpable for much of this, from tortuous formats to renovation shows as extended advertising breaks. Now, as a pal of National, she is getting a bunch of money to help decide whether we need a new flag.
