  • Hard News: Criminalising Journalism,

In these days of leaky-leaks, I wonder why these tapes haven't turned up on the web by now.

  • Speaker: The Public Broadcasting Imperative,

I stopped Coleman on his way out and said, ever so politely but firmly, "You are very, very wrong Mr Coleman". His weasel response was "There will always be differences of opinion". Meanwhile, his minder looked about to pounce on me--maybe a bit het-up by the grilling you had just given his boss.

    Rob; the Academy?

A bit off the subject but I have started doing guest blogs for Critical Studies in Television Online (http://www.cstonline.tv), if you want to check them out. The latest one is about the SoHo channel ('Soho or So-so?')

  • Up Front: Absence in the Arcades,

What happened to La Boheme, the little restaurant down Bedford Row? Used to wash dishes there in my university days, and hang out with the chef Leon in greasy spoons in Manchester Street in the early hours. He let me drive his MG a few times. La Boheme was owned by same Hungarian who had a coffee bar down Chancery Lane, which featured raw sugar in boxes on the table. Seemed tre sophisticated in those days.

Just because I have to share this with someone--just playing the new Tom Waits release "Bad As Me" and it is so FRICKIN' GOOD!! (apologies for raising my voice)

Ah, film society screenings--the famous night when the Wellington Film Society screened Louis Malle's "India" with the reels out of order and no one noticed.

Has anyone caught the telemovie "Temple Grandin" screening on the new SoHo channel this weekend? It is very good.

  • Up Front: Absence in the Arcades,

Thanks, Ian, for such fullsome information. Are the Kaiapoi and Rangiora cinemas still open?

Oh, the dome gone! That hurts.

  • Up Front: Absence in the Arcades,

Loved the paper rose ceiling! It seems to serve its patrons very well and demonstrates that retail developments don't have to be ghastly (like the Te Awa/Hoyts abomination at Te Rapa).
Met some great, enthusiastic movie-lovers up north, such as the group who are raising funds to construct a cinema in the Dargaville Town Hall (which is huge).

  • Up Front: Absence in the Arcades,

Thanks for the link, Ian. I am proposing to revisit the SI next year, to add cinemas to my www.cinemasofnz.info site and will need to compile a list of what cinemas are still operating in Canterbury (eg is the Academy/Cloisters still out of action?). I should be able to ‘do’ the NI this year. Just been around Northland (Matakana to Kaitaia) and planning a trip around Taranaki and Manawatu. There is still a heap of stuff to add but the site is starting to look quite good.
Apparently Alice in Videoland is planning to open again.
What was the Chch cinema which had little balconies with cafe chairs and sun umbrellas?

  • Hard News: Ante Up,

An excellent analysis, Russell. I guess calling on ratings ('reach' in particular) is useful in this context even though I believe the Peoplemeter measurement system to be a load of horse-poop. The best solution to finding a way to pay is targeting Sky and their unfettered monopoly, but even Labour seems too scared to venture that idea.
