A hook comes in from the side, so it's quite possible to punch someone right on the side of the jaw from behind. The bone of the jawline goes back as far as your ears. Also, "from behind" could mean anywhere in a 180 degree arc, so even a straight punch could do it.
But we haven't heard the other side of the story. Particularly since Garrett claims to have been temporarily knocked out, it's unlikely he'd have clear recall. That he was not simply treated as a victim by the judge does not fill me with confidence that we know the whole story - I've seldom heard a fight told in an impartial way by the participants. People who are injured in the way Garrett claims typically press charges, and considering his public stance on law and order I'd expect it to be doubly so for him.

how do you break someone's jaw from behind
A hook would do it. But this is all how Garrett tells it. It could have been to-and-fro, and he just came off second best.
what could you possibly do to wind up a psychiatrist to the point of violence?
Something to do with the psychiatrist's wife, was what Garrett said.

Heh, that would be amusing, if name suppression actually applied to the person whose name is suppressed. I wonder if that's ever come up before. Certainly it's a creative defense and it also sounds like complete BS.

Thinking about it, the earthquake is one of the biggest vindications there has ever been for strict building codes which can delay completion of projects. To pass a law saying that these things can be overridden shows the politicians learned nothing from our "miracle".

A scrap in Tonga, and a stolen ID? He's only got one more strike.

Great comment from sammy on DimPost:
What strange priorities New Zealanders have. We must be ever vigilant against attacks on the hotel mini-bar, but Ministers can help themselves to all the power they can handle.

I saw that. Fuck! Surely not, surely he's unelectable?
He's not unelectable, but he is deluded. I highly doubt receiving a conviction for obvious crimes has helped his chances with the conservative electorate, and even being brought to the attention of the left will help them steer clear of accidentally ticking him on the ballot.

The more I think about this the more scared I get. Dictatorial powers just aren't needed, and I can see abuse of them being not just possible but actually likely. It will start with minor laws, the checks and balances types, such as the RMA. No need to actually fix those laws, lets just ignore them under emergency powers.

I manage my mental illness and alcoholism (with a lot of unconditional love and support from angels in human guise) and don't use it as an excuse for being a shit. There's a lot of us out there.
Yes, there are. I've been encountering a lot of depressed people recently, who show better character than Slater in two ways. Firstly, they don't use it as an excuse. Secondly, they admit to it and seek help, which is probably the hardest part. It's the only way they'll get better.

But, to be expected, I suppose.
For sure. The whole thread read like a parody, especially the repeated claims that Slater has huge gonads. If you deliberately break a law because you disagree with it, the courageous thing to do is take it right on the chin, to say "Yeah, guilty and proud!", not to slither around trying to make out that you weren't really trying to break the law, or that you broke it because you're sick.
