Not much into HM myself--it all sounds rather hackneyed and the Tshirts are so ugly--but I encountered a curious coincidence today. At my old university in Ohio (Bowling Green State Univ) to do some research and a presentation. A visitor two weeks before me was Dave Snell from Univ of Waikato, doing a talk on his study of NZ bogans for an augural Heavy Metal conference. Received press coverage in the Toledo Blade and Wall Street Journal.

More blue skies in California, this time from Hearst Castle in San Simeon –truly a monument to hubris. Note the cabbage tree! I also spotted a manuka in flower.

Yes, they are remarkable. My favourites are the American Modernist Garden and the Indian Garden.

Things are feeling rather fragile in the US tonight. We are in Cambria CA.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Walking Distance, in reply to Russell Brown,

A front page story on Coachella in today's LA Times describes scaled back sound volumes and 'comfy chairs' to meet the needs of concert goers. We were in that neck of the woods last weekend and shade and buckets of water seemed more appropriate,

Just to revive an old thread, this pic is from my current (April 2013) research-oriented travels in the US (California and Ohio)--not to seek out old cinemas, but I do take notice of them along the way. This is the Riverside CA cinema, built in 1929 and most notably the first cinema in the US to screen Gone With the Wind:

[From Santa Monica]. Hmmm. Aren't we getting a bit ageist here, with the references to dad rock? I can recall Jeff Tweedy sounding off about such a lazy slur recently. I cannot comprehend the appeal of dance/electronica but everyone to their own tastes...

So, Neil Young was tremendous in Wellington, but in chronological terms he should be grandpa rock?

As others have commented: One should only speak good of the dead. She is dead. Good.

  • Hard News: Thatcher,

What is most difficult is people telling us that we should show 'respect' or 'compassion'. No, that is not needed nor justified; it should be kept for those people who lives were ruined by Thatcherism...and the hideous legacy she has bequeathed to us all,

What was most extraordinary was driving by volcano cones, surrounded by extensive ancient lava flows. Really empty roads too across the Mohave Desert.
