"allowing enrollment on polling day by producing ID."

You can cast a special vote on the day if you are not on the roll but believe you should be.

Apropos RealMe, to obtain validated RealMe is an onerous process that requires fronting at a Post Office etc with documents. Otherwise there's nothing stopping you setting up a RealMe account for Donald Duck -- it's the validation that makes it ok to use for serious business, and that of course requires an in-person transaction with a bunch of papers.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Dylan Reeve,

I guess I just kind of want to like him somehow

You are not alone. Many people find him very likeable. He is what Johnson would have called a very clubbable man. And playing the role of the honest partisan is part of his schtick.

[And again, it's part of mine too.]

    only new aspect

But it is a very interesting and scandalous aspect that a paid staffer of the PM illicitly accessed the server and then connived to break the story as a scandal rather than quietly advising the site administrators, which is what any decent person would have done. Especially since a) Slater claimed he did it all on his own and b) the Nats and the PM in particular have always denied feeding things to Slater.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Dylan Reeve,

he’s always seemed to be basically straight up. I’ve no doubt he’s received tips from political insiders (as do most political journalists as Russell pointed out) but tend to assume he’s not involved in the outright spin

Wow. I don't know why. I've always assumed he's a hack through and through, given his very close and well known ties to National.

(For the avoidance of doubt, I am a Labour LEC chair and running an electorate campaign).

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

Many people use the same passwords everywhere. Easy to imagine that the WhaleOil blog admin account and, say, Slater’s FB account had the same password. So compromising the web server might yield the info needed to compromise things elsewhere.

  • Hard News: Not doing justice, in reply to Keir Leslie,

many, if not most, delusional paranoiacs manage not to post boring and offensive nonsense on the internet.

I wish PAS had favourite buttons because if it did I would mash it hard on that one.

  • Hard News: Not doing justice, in reply to Russell Brown,

Shearer is so much better now he's off the leash. Also, he's speaking in the area where he is strongest -- of course he's great, he knows that shit inside out.

When he was on the leash, he had the ability to select his advisers, and the ability to refuse their advice. He had the option to speak from conviction and instinct, and the option to inform himself. His performance then is still the result of his choices if he was badly advised and underinformed.

Maybe he would have grown in to being leader if given longer, or maybe not. I don't think we can say even now.

On the antisemitism front, can't help but think that the current fighting in Gaza is playing a role there. But maybe social media is letting us know more and know faster re defaced billboards and dopey comments? Maybe the cult of Key is having unexpected blowback as people struggle for angles of resistance, however stupid? I don't know.

  • Hard News: Media Take and Godwin's Election,

Don’t these experienced journalists get that they’re being fed this stuff in a deliberate fashion?

They don’t care. Political bias aside, controversy is fun, facts are boring, and politics is basically gossip with uglier celebrities.

    Yes, I really think that.

(Added later) The entertainment side of the business has taken over.

smear about Dotcom owning a book.

If you pay a lot of money for an autographed Mein Kampf I damn well will think less of you. "Owning a book" is wilfully missing the point.

You can perceive whatever you like, Pete. You just don't get to insist you're correct or have the last word, any more than anyone else.
