Hey Megan! Congratulations.
Great post. And an auspicious start. 354 Twitter followers already on @thewirelessnz. ( after this comment I will see if I can figure out how to post a picture of the launch in this thread.)
The content strategy behind what you are doing there looks great to me and what you say above explains that a little - targeted share-able usable content about stuff that matters to the yoof. As always the key will be in creating content that connects which is as we all know remarkably difficult.
You can't go much past the advice given to Hamlet, be true to yourselves and you will be true to your audience. And be courageous too.
I was particularly excited with the news of the $190k budget for digital content contributions - this is an initiative which is much needed and is paving the way for funding of digital news content online.

I DID like the division of the populace I heard recently (RNZ???) The Natives and Migrants. The Natives are the Millennnials, those who were born into the digital world (<35 yrs) , Migrants who have (had to) move(d) into it. (>35 yrs). Cute……but sadly true….
So this is Nat-ive Radio at it’s best !

Yes, and we're certainly not the only people trying to do that. But we're being guided by some really solid research about what people care about. And we've set ourselves the task of making sure to actually have young voices - which means they're telling us their stories.

Excellent news. I have hammered on for a long time about the need for Nat Rad to be doing more to draw in a younger audience and a little less for the audience which is rapidly shuffling off to the rest home (no more Matinee Idle, please!!!)
But we need to be cautious about this ‘digital natives/immigrants’ scenario, for there is evidence that older users are in catch-up mode re newer digital technology, and often more competent than younger users. Many of my students can find their way around the web but are less adept at judging the value or authenticity of what they find eg many cannot discern agendas, nor place things in a historical or cultural context, nor distinguish knowledge from information. One repeated error is ignoring the date of publication of sources, so that something first published in 1969 is treated with the same regard as something published in 2009. Which is why I think that educators have a vital role in mediating between students and technology. -

As a migrant (wtf) I'd also like to welcome thewireless - looks great
I do hope this website initiative isn't the justification to never revisit the concept of a youth radio network - something that for the time being still has much merit (and much to fear).

Mike Dickison made the interesting observation on Twitter this morning that some of us have been on the internet longer than some millennials have been alive. I've been publishing to the internet for 20 years.
But there is something different about it always having been a reality. My younger son, 19, has never lived in a house without an internet connection.
But they've both also always lived in a house with a VCR (or PVR). Their relationship with media is profoundly different to mine in that respect. For them, the ability to copy and repeat is just a given.

After graduating from being insufferable hippies, Lucy's parents embarked on their careers. As the 70s, 80s, and 90s rolled along, the world entered a time of unprecedented economic prosperity. Lucy's parents did even better than they expected to.
And thus the problems facing that generation were easily ignored, and compounded in that studied ignorance. To become a cause of concern for future generations now. Not just one generation.

Exactly!
How can you have a radio station that doesn't broadcast on a radio frequency? It isn't actually a radio station, it is a youth orientated web site. Calling it a radio station is an abuse of the English language.
We still don't have a youth radio network.
The interview with Cecile Richards was quite good though.

Radio is a niche ,medium and unlikely to grow in future. This is the right approach for public media in the youth market. Fixating on broadcast radio on actual radio waves is a mistake.
On another note, while many of my contempories might be migrants, I'm a goddam autochthon in that case. 1989, email, telnet and Usenet.
