C-questration - OK, this word doesn't exist yet, but it should. It's relevant, urgent, and it's preoccupied in New Zealanders over the last year. So let's make it WOTY. It can then go forth and prosper.

Thanks for this. I have been quite skeptical about legalising cannabis, because smoking pot is a dumb thing to do IMO, but after listening to Chloe v Bob, I've changed my mind. I still think it's a dumb thing to do, but treating it as a health issue rather than a crime will very likely minimise harm, as she suggests. Bob's argument is about as effective as one of those laughable, 1950s era anti-pot films we were shown in high school.

Hard News: What we learned yesterday…, in reply to
t does seem odd to have a referendum. Shouldn't a decision on the best way to deal with drugs be evidence based, within a framework of political philosophy (such as whether people's bodies are their own, or chattels of the state? You could have a referendum on that.)
Politics is always as much about public opinions as it is about evidence. A referendum can promote information of the public.

I also wholly agree with your point about debates, get 'em all in the room together.
And bar the door before that twit Hosking shows up.

Speaker: Polling 2017: life beyond landlines?, in reply to
At present you have to conclude one or more of the polling companies is doing it wrong - pretty badly wrong as well.
It makes for easy entertainment and fills minutes on the news - but personally I don't think it adds any value to our democracy and could well be doing harm.
Completely agree, Bart. It will influence how people vote. For instance, Labour voters will be tempted to vote Green to get Greens across the line this time around. If the polls are biased then people are misinformed about impacts of their voting choices.

Don't tell Barnaby Joyce about voting from a foreign country, OK? Just sayin...

Hard News: A thundering clash of, in reply to
The best the Herald could do was that English had legal advice it was OK…..
So if you want to commit fraud, just pay a lawyer to tell you it’s OK. Then the judge will know you made an effort to comply and it just didn’t work out. Your butt is covered.
Yeah, but he made a false declaration to Parliamentary Services. He’d need a very low IQ to think that, just because a lawyer tells him so, it’s OK to lie in order to pillage the public purse.
