  • Hard News: The Huawei Question,

We certainly need some clarity on this, rather than scare-mongering, Smacks of Yellow Cable Peril.

Got a note to say that high-speed broadband will be passing by our house within days. Should I covertly spy on the installers?

  • Hard News: Keeping Austin Weird,

Well, Austin TX has competition. I picked up a bumper sticker in Portland ORE a couple of weeks ago which read Portland : Keep It Weird They claim prior ownership on it. In either case, I think they are only mildly or respectably weird.

  • Hard News: Little Treasures,

Was recommended The Punch Brothers "Who's Feeling Young Now?" and it is bloody good and , dare I say, so is Springsteen's new"Wrecking Ball". Also the Arcade Fire track "Abraham's Daughter" on The Hunger Games soundtrack, which in turn is from a surprisingly intelligent and engrossing movie,

    Good stuff all round,

  • Hard News: Back to mediocrity,

The Chiefs are giving us hope this year and it is not all due to SWB.

  • Capture: Better Food Photography,

Our passion fruit is sending out confusing messages. The skin remains green but the pulp is ripe. Is this a particular variety?

On something completely different, I think we need a new cinema thread (Craig?). Went to The Hunger Games today and I was impressed. Really superior to the current slate of empty-calories mainstream movies. The film society has also been offering some treasures, such as Asphalt Jungle and Wake In Fright.

  • Capture: Better Food Photography,

I would post a photo of the first feijioa to fall but will dig out some recipes instead. The old-style Captain Kidd apples are especially delicious this year, despite the lack of sun.

Completely off the topic: those damn French! I have always wondered why we have never made a decent New Zealand movie about rugby. Saw Jo's Boy at the French Film Festival today--a feel-good movie about fathers and sons and rugby but set in France (with the ABs as aspirational heroes).

Jeepers. That would be the daughter of Leonard Wilcox, my former teacher and pal at the university, and Jane Dunbar of The Press. Leonard is a very good jazz drummer.

  • Capture: Two Tripods, One Night, in reply to Jos,

Well, it was a little puzzling, to queue in the street for 20 minutes and then go through a convoluted process in the shop itself, all for sugary donuts with daft names like Marshall Mathers and McMiniville. My objective was to get a tshirt for my daughtrer and I can only judge the quality of the fare on the one Bavarian Cream donut I bought. A bit too sweet.

It is interesting how such places gain a certain mystiwque, when in other circumstance they would be run-of-the-mill shops. One other place I visited years ago was a bar devoted to Klinger from M*A*S*H, in Toledo, Ohio.,

I wonder if it is just an American phenomenon. Nevertheless, I like places with literary or film associations, such as the Jack London bar in Oakland CA, for Jack did once drink there.
