Speaking of jokes, did anyone watch Portlandia_on TV3 last night? Hilarious. Well, off to see the Chiefs win another game. There is likely to be some bad music there.

And the cherry on top of the cake is Al Green.

Jackie; check out the song 'Aretha' by Rumer. I think you will love it.

I really like this quote from the UK magazine The Word (April 2012) in an article on 'authenticity' in contemporary music, We're well aware that Bruce Springsteen is a 62-year-old gentleman farmer from rural New Jersey but we also expect him to persuade us that he is a hormonal twenty-something grease monkey on a runaway American dream. . it's part of the fun...Authenticity is the degree of belief the audience has in its own fantasies- [the last bit attributed to Wendy Fonarow]

I guess the same could be said about good and bad music.

Lilith; a well-placed opinion. Tom's work achieve that much-sought-after but elusive
    idea of authenticity.

Hebe; my experience of elaborate weddings (not that many) is that males are largely irrelevant to the process. Bridegrooms could just as well be cardboard cutouts, for all they do. Some weddings are significant; many are meaningless displays of conspicuous consumption (and bad music).

Just a thought...didn't we get enough of this with Matinee Idle over summer? Stopped listening to that about two years ago.

    pparnold.com has some interesting stories...

Oh yes, I recall now seeing her name associated with the Sandy Denny tribute show. Something in common there ie self-mutilation in I'd Rather Go Blind?

I mean, we can still be friends, but ...

Wasn't that a Todd Rungren song?

.P. P. Arnold. First to have a hit with First Cut, never bettered IMHO.

And mine.. Whatever happened to her?

Never got Morrissey, with his bloody gladiolis and his flat, bordering-on-out-of-tune voice.

Oh, Peter. How can you possibly say that about Arcade Fire???

I think there is quite enough to wince over already but if you reassess some older music, it just doesn't sound as it good as we once thought it was. Janis Joplin, for instance. Bellowing rather than singing.

What about alt.country, Jackie? A different kettle of country fish ie Lucinda Williams. Wilco, Steve Earle etc. Currently reading an MA thesis from VUW about alt.country and it is really interesting.

To talk of good stuff, I had The Punch Brothers Who's Feeling Young Now? recommended to me. It is thrilling music. There is also good stuff on The Hunger Games soundtrack (believe me!)
