  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

Emma will automatically defend herself if she disagrees.

    Actually, I do, and I won't.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to giovanni tiso,

There is a disconnect here in my view: if the sensitivity to alterity and diversity in Emma’s writing and threads could be transferred into the more broadly political sphere, the community would begin to see through class boundaries.

The reason those discussions work is that no-one is dumb or insensitive enough to be a nit-picky fight chasing arsehole on those threads. My number two rule is "read kindly".

  • Hard News: Word of the Year 2011 -- The Vote!, in reply to Sacha,

The similarly frequent and #eqnz-linked “kia kaha” seems less fondly remembered here.

it might have been frequent (I don't actually think it was as frequent) but it didn't have the longevity, and Word of the Year favours things that were either recent or persistent. Kia kaha didn't resonate down here the way "munted" did. Some people (not me) found it patronising.

  • Hard News: Word of the Year 2011 -- The Vote!, in reply to James Butler,

I have to admit, I hadn't associated "munted" particularly with #eqnz until this thread.

    I don't even.

  • Hard News: Word of the Year 2011 -- The Vote!, in reply to Steve Cooke,

I really can’t work out the fuss about ‘munted’. It’s not as though it’s a new word for 2011, spontaneously springing from the rubble of Christchurch. It has been around for at least 20 years to my knowledge.

Steve, seriously, while we were digging our arses out of liquifaction, cooking in our garages and crapping in our gardens, we were also supposed to invent a new word to describe the situation? Sorry we didn't live up to your standards.

  • Up Front: The Up Front Guides:…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I manfully resisted that line, mostly because I really don't know Is at all. But I'm glad someone used an utterly perfect setup.

I am quite impressed with Megan's courage in starting this discussion about people who sleep with other's people's friends. Not to imply that it could possibly go badly for her.

See that’s what you have friends for

    That's why. I was wondering.

Now can you remember their name?

Just what are you implying, Bart? Do you think I habitually can't remember the names of people I've slept with? Hmm?

    ...

    Fuck.

“intelligent interest” is not the same as “obsessional devotion”

Indeed. I can't remember the last time I had sex with someone who didn't like cricket.

    No. Wait. Actually, I can.

So it was an awful test pitch, if you count lost time for rain less than 4 days play.

Matthew Littlewood called it "greener than a first year at Orientation".

And it's not entirely off topic because "intelligent interest in cricket" = "hot".
