Are you carrying some black-back-drop-cloth with you, or is it just conveniently dark in the Dunedin botanic gardens?
The later, more or less- It is a tree rich gardens, so if a flower is in direct sun you can probably line up an angle where the background is in shadow that looks black in contrast (and the picture exposure based on the very brightly lit flower). That said, I also have my camera set to 1/3 of a stop darker exposure than the defaults, as I prefer the results that gives (particularly in direct sun).
