  • Hard News: OGB Update,

Okay, Chch PASers, we have a date for Stress Relief Drinkies: the 21st of July. Not only is this not a weekend I'm moving, and not a weekend my partner is having a birthday, but the Lovely Lucy is going to be in town! Venue and time TBA, what with the now permanent difficulty of getting around post-quake Chch.

Heh, I have to be in Auckland on the 6th, Serving at Russell's Pleasure, but I'm sure we could swing something.

Lilith: two to three weeks, they reckon. Co-ordinating everything between our insurance company, Fletcher's, the contractors actually doing the work, our accommodation and our cattery... is driving me pretty bugshit.

ETA: Emma: don't tell me you're tied up.

    Alright, I won't.

Actually... this is not a good month for me to be trying to do this, what with packing up my whole house and moving into temporary accommodation while we have repairs done. But. We really need it.

Lilith__: we're so desperate for entertainment I'm working on organising Chch drinks for, and I can hardly believe I'm saying this, absolutely no reason at all. The keen should let me know and I'll start trying to work out the logistics.

I also have absolutely vivid memories of seeing videos showing how auxin (a plant hormone) moves in the little cluster of cells at the top of the plant that subsequently grow out into everything you see.

But auxin is amazing! You could fascinate people over auxin in a bar with a pencil and a napkin.

ETA: By 'napkin' I obviously mean 'serviette'. I dunno WTF is happening to my class roots.

Although the programme would presumably be written by a curator or critic, from whom one would reasonably expect good grammar.

Don't be silly, it's only comms. Anyone can do comms. It's just words, right?

I wasn't going to mention the electrodes...

Oh darling, I think they go without saying by now...

To me it’s like criticizing an artist for bad grammar in the gallery programme.

    *twitch*

there is also a study that recently showed that people asked to read a paragraph written in ALLCAPS were less likely to accept dogma or were more critical in their thinking than people who read the same paragraph in normal font.

You mean forced to read, right? Because most people will simply not read the ALLCAPS. Which of course is the main effect of making something "harder to read".

  • Hard News: Who'd have thought?, in reply to BenWilson,

I can't comment on whether parents paid more or less after mufti came in, on an annual basis. Gut feeling is that it didn't change at all.

Like Hilary says, for poorer parents uniform is a nightmare, because it's a big outlay all at once. And then it requires being able to keep the same sets of clothes clean and dry all the time. If the school kilt is $160, how many are you going to have? Our kids are now both at (different) non-uniform high schools, and it's so much easier for us.

I went to a school that was uniform in junior school and mufti in senior. It's completely different from having a "mufti day". That meant fretting over what you were going to wear on the only day you got any choice. Seventh form was picking up whatever was closest on the floor.

    That Guy

Deliverer of, and this is a high bar, the least subtle pick-up line I've ever been on the receiving end of.

Thanks, Tracy. It was a hell of a piece to write, and to open up to view, and while the feedback was nothing but positive, it was also bloody exhausting.
