    rescinder cones...

The presence of multiple boutique-sized volcanic cones is such a bonus.

be careful what you wish for...

...after half a century plus, I was growing fond of Christchurch
warts and all, but now its faults are losing their charm ....

Chch on film – the lost city

not to forget Frighteners for its morphing of Lyttelton into “Anytown, USA”, left hand drive and all…

I think we featured in a British UK series back in the ’70s – Mogul / Troubleshooters when in one shot they arrived in Auckland, drove thru Wellington into the Lyttelton road tunnel – or similar geographical mash-up. – aaah simpler times….

Might be worth suggesting that Chch streetscapes with bands video/DVD to Flying Nun – they don’t appear to be doing anything else lately, and this would be a strong hook to hang some nostalgia on…

  • Up Front: Where You From?, in reply to Russell Brown,

    Hence the Builders’ ‘Clifford Flat’?

    I would imagine so…
Bill has sourced local businesses for inspiration at times –
one of his earlier bands was after all Vacuum Blue Ladder
named a after a cleaning firm in Gloucester Street…

The song before Clifford Flat on the Builders compilation Pyx vol 4
is Alligator Song the film clip for which was filmed in the now rubbled lane areas off Manchester st.. The Bats did a great clip in the now sadly demolished ANZ building (World) on Lichfield / High corner… in fact one could probably compile a great DVD of Chch Clips with now destroyed landmarks in them – could be a fundraiser.
(Many will be pleased to know that the corrugated iron fence and shed in the background of The Tall Dwarfs’ Weeville LP cover are still standing!)

Does anyone know what has happened to the Mysterex blogspot ?
it seems to have disappeared – which would be a crime against the frailty of human memory – well mine anyway…

The Big Mac Book is here...?

The Linwood McDonalds, where as a librarian,
I got to go before it opened...

I haven't been into a McDonald's for many, many years, but am heartened to hear they now have libraries, and librarians, on site
    - are they near the toilets?

  • Up Front: Where You From?, in reply to Lea Barker,

    tales from the flatland...

... if any of you were living in Chch in the 70s, do you remember the name of the landlord who owned scores of rundown houses that he split into flats and rented out to students?

One of the larger than life character landlords around the inner city was Mrs "Ma" Clifford, though I think her son may have taken over in the late '60s and '70s, and yes, I believe they were fairly parsimonious with their paint purchases...
She had many of the old houses on Worcester, Hereford, Montreal and Cashel streets. She lived at 52 Worcester street and biked everywhere...

though there were other landlords with largish portfolios as well, the Cliffords are the ones I remember...

...other glimpses of Christchurch's past can be garnered here

NEW ZEALAND IS NOT FOR SALE

Murray Horton, spokesperson of the Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa (CAFCA), is touring the country and will speak on:
    • The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement and the dangers it poses to our economy and democracy.
    • Privatisation of our public assets.
    • The relentless takeover of NZ businesses and land by transnational corporations.
    • The re-absorption of NZ into the US Empire.
    • And, importantly, how the New Zealand people can fight back; it’s too important to be left up to politicians.
There are some differences between National and Labour on these issues, but only ones of degree, not principle. A change in government will not, be enough to change the disastrous course on which this country is set.

  • Hard News: What Now?,

    Rubble is my business...

Business owners complain about not being allowed to retrieve items from buildings before demolition.

Personally I wouldn't trust Southern Demolition as far as I could throw them,
    too gung-ho for my liking...
I don't recall hearing that they bid for, and won, salvage rights - how could they have on such a huge and unknown quantity?
So surely their role is just breaking down and removing the debris, and any rubble and contents should be sequestered somewhere and still remain the property of owners, occupiers and/or insurance companies.
Any other removal of goods from this detritus should be regarded as looting...
Does anyone else know if they have been granted salvage rights?

Democracy for people with the biggest wallets doesn’t impress me much.

what does that even mean in this context?

    boycott
withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest.
    • refuse to buy or handle (goods) as a punishment or protest.
    • refuse to cooperate with or participate in (a policy or event).
