  • Hard News: Believe the Hype,

    You should've said hello!

Hey, yes maybe next time. I think my man did the honours . You guys were havin' fun, as many were . I got there in enough time to greet Damien and wish him well on what will be a fine journey. My Dad just got in from a year hiking around South America and he made it to Galbraiths also, hence I became a wee bit involved with that, but must admit Ranapia would be fun. :-) and Mr Slack would be a pleasure, including yourself Mr Brown. Merry Xmas and Happy (birthday for me )new year to all out there.

  • Hard News: Believe the Hype,

I decided I'd go the extra mile

And... looked like you and Damien were starting the extra early also. It is always nice to hear bursts of laughter that reflect the intention of said evening. Cheers :)

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

I must admit that, having a chance to vote t'other day, tried for one I suggested (crunch) but although it was on the list it don't appear in the choice box. The onomatopoeic quality helps me to like it. I 'll go sulk now cos I accepted Credit crunch and now I don't want that but alas I have voted.

  • Hard News: From soundbite to policy,

I agree with him about the goal being full literacy - though I note the concession "majority" in his last post - but I reckon achieving that would require far more resources than are currently proposed.

As pointed out earlier, we are already doing a pretty good job . The issue raised is truancy fines for our poorest families who are often proven to have these problems and the"no child left behind " (showing evidence of failure) policy is one that other Parties were debating in the House. Literacy and Numeracy are ALREADY in the National Education Guide. Punishing people by taxing the vulnerable, increasing the fines for truancy, as well as taking away their right to due process for dismissal should they try to deal with a truant child, all bills under urgency, seems like a jolly nice National way of saying "Merry Xmas, Up Yours". Nice

wouldn't you want their results listed along with all the others?

Nobody is supposed to see any results. At least that is what Tolley thinks she can have (not thinking through freedom of information for a start) These Standards are Tolley set standards with a, for her eyes only results. This is a reason for a lot of the opposition. Here we have an inexperienced person with no expertise, making tests and results available to only herself, rushing a Bill through the House, under urgency, without any advice via Select Committee, thinking the entire country should let her decide what is best for all the children and parents of NZ. It is the duty of other parties to advise us of what is happening. Hell, I think this kind of presumptuous behaviour is not just arrogant, it is dangerous, and, I don't even have kids!
