  • Hard News: Cultures and violence, in reply to Russell Brown,

The formatting is confusing – “list of familicides” isn’t inclusive of familicides in the US, but “list of workplace killings” and school killing are inclusive of the US.

I do note that per capita, our three familicides puts us above the US, as well, as measured by wikipedia consensus.

  • Hard News: Cultures and violence,

The US, remarkably, is entirely absent from the list of 129 mass family killings.

The wikipedia page to which you link begins with the following:

This section of the list of rampage killers contains all cases where most of the victims were relatives of the perpetrator.

For familicides in the United States see: List of familicides in the United States
For familicides in Europe see: List of familicides in Europe

    So not very remarkable, then.

  • Hard News: Public Address Word of the…,

Trying to work out if there's a reason that C words (CERA, crowdsourcing) are other than in alphanumerical order, but am at a loss. Something to do with the speed of light?

Doesn't it seem weird, but 9/11 isn't part of the last decade.

  • Hard News: Fact and fantasy, in reply to Russell Brown,

She appears to do so at some length in the next paragraph of her column. Did you bother to read it?

I have read it. It lists one matter germane to the point I am making, which links, in effect, to a Green Party press release on a policy that hasn't been enacted.

I cannot see this this announcement can have caused dirty rivers.

  • Hard News: Fact and fantasy,

As Stuff columnist Nicola Toki put it last week:
Let me dumb it down a little for the Mark Unsworths of this world. It is not people like Mike Joy who are “risking jobs and incomes from decreased tourism to New Zealand”. It is our own mucky, degrading habits, and a lax approach to environmental care and regulation, most notably taken by the current government.

This will need something to back it up. The current Government is taking a slightly less stringent approach to the "taxing" of greenhouse emissions. I know of no change to our environmental regulations under the current government that would make it easier for, for example, our agricultural sector to be more polluting of lowland waterways.

Perhaps Ms Toki (or someone else here) can point me to some regulatory changes made by the current government that make the matters complained of here, worse?

  • Hard News: Judging the judges, in reply to Matthew Poole,

I imagine one of the things Russell will be asking about is the level of coverage their opinions get in the MSM.

All the more reason to have them on! Although, to be fair to Russell, I think he has.

we already know what their contribution will be: “Judges need to be accountable to the public for their decisions, and judges whose decisions piss us off need to be at risk of losing their jobs.” And that contribution is not helpful.

That contribution may not be, but the answers to the follow-up questions: "why?" and "aren't you concerned that...?" could well be.

No Sensible Sentencing Trust representative then?
    *verylargesafetywink*

Do you assume an SST representative would not add to the conversation in some way?

  • Hard News: Calling the race before it's over, in reply to Chris Waugh,

Labour leader David Shearer has summoned an urgent caucus meeting for tomorrow to seek endorsement from members of the party.

Members of the Party? Shearer wants caucus support to take this to the membership?

But no one usually achieves 100% support ever

Peter Dunne and John Banks have 100% support from their respective caucuses :-)
