…unless proven otherwise...
I am ignorant of the law, but I would have thought that if there was anyone with the resources and legal authority to require the logs from the third party in this (Facebook) for a conversation at a known time and date, it would be the Inspector General of the SIS investigating the leaking of classified documents. In fact, if everyone denies everything, I would say this is a logical step in a thorough investigation.

Hard News: Didn't see that coming, in reply to
Well, if both Slater and the Labour Party complain to the Police about hacking it will be interesting to see how each case is dealt with, as it seems to me there are obvious persons of interest in the Labour Party hack.

The Fairfax profile of the hacker really does not sound like KDC, but given the hacker is giving away information about why he is doing it, and posting orginal things aside from only what was obtained from Whaleoil's site, My sweepstake bet would be within three weeks the police will have a pretty narrow list of suspects.

my sense is that there may have several people independently* exploring the ruins of Slater's server as it fell over. But that is just speculation.
*independent in the sense of a bunch of unrelated people going "get him" at the same time

So as I read and understand it, the Herald have commentor logs from Whaleoil's site and can link "anonymous" (pseudonymous) posts, the email address the account was registered from, and the IP address of the machine that it was posed from. Browlee's press secretary just seems to have been identified by email address, but if the Herald have some good data analysis people they could do a lot more. This aspect may just be getting started.

There are actual reports of criminals who have been entering into people's homes in Auckland through unlocked windows and copying the credit card information without removing anything from the premises. I am not being metaphorical about this. But since it was not secured access and they only copied things (though they knew they didn't have the rights to the information) does anyone want to argue no crime was actually committed?

They don't mind losing money on iPredict. They have money, and want to use that money to buy stories about how well National is doing. Spending $200 on national raising the odds -> seed news story about how well national is doing. Compared to the cost of buying advertising, it is peanuts for the news coverage it generates, and it looks more natural.

"Jesus fucking Christ, is Hagar expecting a medal made out of warm cookie dough?"
Craig, I may be naive, but I just read that (as someone who expects people to note their research sources) he was noting what was in the book was not what he was given, and marking out the nature of the area he had excluded.
