I'm just off to vote (in Franz Josef.) Bright sunshine here, with a bit of a breeze.
Because I'm registered in Te Tai Toka, mine will be a special vote, but there'll be quite a few of those - tourists, seasonal statt et al- -
Interesting sidelight from the denizens of the bowels of Big O:
there is one American resident in the settlement. Who is married to a German. They'll be voting tomorrow. They spent much of yesterday afternoon & evening with a 6th generation NZer, who matches their combined ages, and used to be quite prominent in Wellington. It was a gloriously joyously teary evening - with really good wine and local goodies (which I wont provoke salivation by describing.) But the - not-amazing- thing to me was how dedicated Labour/Green people (6th gen. Pakeha) and socially-concerned new residents latched on to the word "hope" and how, by comparison, tomorrow's election will not involve "hope."
It'll either be steady as she goes (my preference & pick) or gawwwd, not again! Nat-despoilers! We're gunna have to dig in, endure, and quickly get rid of the barstaaads-
Earth - humanity - really has been under a doomful cloud for the last 8 years eh?

Danielle! Just wear a discrete/blatant PAS Women's XV shirt (which my midwife sisters will swap you all kinds of interesting thngs for) at the Huiatau (Kaikoura) in less than 2 weeks from now - we'll feed laud and welcome you, big time!

I come from what used to be called 'a Labour Party family.'
None of us have (as far as I know) ever been Labour Party members- but we vote Labour (well, none of us ever ask each other about that, it's jusr assumed from our attitudes et al...)
My conservative acting father - before he died at age 42- was president of the local Working Man's Club (in New Brighton, Christchurch) annnd - president of the local Buisnessman's Association
(ditto.) The only early political activity I can ever remember was helping much old people stuff envelopes for Jock Msthieson-my father was born here, but his folk came from England.
My family is Kai Tahu, and we hold to a several-generations-back agreement with Ratana - we vote Labour. This year I'll vote the (fairly-useless )Okeroa and tick the Greens. I hope that two-way comes in.
There's no way in hell I'd vote Maori Party - almost totally North Island dominated, and riddled with people who have agendas that have almost nothing to do with the South-
may we still be rejoicing about political futures late Saturday -

Ka nui te koa!
Now, if only I wasnt an atheist, I swear I would hear my late Uncle Bill chuckling with delight... -
Giovanni - great! Just dont come later than the 14th.We relish kids (ur, you know what we mean) but 'Baiting ends then, and Mary (Mama/Whaea/or as my dialect has it Hakui) is going bluecod fishing at Kaikoura after the hui-a-tau so I will be awa then- mind you, be happy to meet/greet/feed you all any time (the butcher fell ill with a lung disorder so your Nonna's ANZ incarnation of her recipe - hasnt nappened yet-) but do we make cook up good stuff anytime?
YES! -
O wow Giovanni, that was such a Giesel-switcheroo!

robbery - under current copyright law - for writers- I do control my work. How do I feel about this? Good. Do i want to sell this right/these rights? Not often. Do I want to give that right/these rights away? Extremely occaisionally! BUT- these things pertain to the body of my work which is- actually- quite large.
The only (so far) novel is ring-fenced. I own - totally- all the subsidary rights. I have made a will which ensures NONE of my trustees can alienate the dramatisation rights for that paticular novel. As I said upthread, "rancidity" is a ludicrous concept. I know of at least 2 exhibitions (both in Europe) of people making artworks from my characters (as in paintings.) I know of (illicit - but student) sound dramatisations - I put these into the same place wherein I drew Tolkien characters as a fan.I truly deeply believe that our Aotearoa-NZ culture progresses by weirdos like me creating new work, and I have absolutely NO obligation to anyone (except my family, tipuna ma, all the books I've ever read, scents I've smelled, sights I've seen et al ) + 8>)
and I am resolute that I have no obligation to anyone except - well, me, my mother, Spiral Collective - to donate any damn thing about my works to anybody else whomsoever... play with? They pay!@And they cant. They dont have anything me or mine - want-

Kia ora Kerry- I gave up counting approaches from film-makers in the early 1990s when the ones offering contracts reached plus 300- you see, my classic wave-away went, there are stories that work in front of your eyes, and stories that work best behind your eyes- my novel works best in your mind.
cgi wasnt around then, and the best multilayered films I know about are cgi's...regrettably, I dont have the geeky skills- later, some of my family may-

Kerry, a contract for a writer will contain a list of options the publisher wants from the proprietor under "Subsidary Rights" -those that are desirable to the Publisher aside from the basic right to publish your work for a specified term in hardback and/or softback trade or B formats. (NB: this is not the same as selling *copyright* in the work.) Subsidary Rights can include audio, electronic, and dramatisation (in any medium.)
Because I had the benefit of advice from the wonderful members of Spiral Collective 5, I have never signed a contract that required me to alienate these rights - I uniformly strike them out of all contracts, including foriegn language contracts.
And certainly, they can be separately negotiated at a later date - if the conditions are right (e.g. the conditions will never be right for self or my trustees to allow the making of a live film of a certain novel.)
