I was in Chch a couple of weeks ago, to do a talk at CPIT, and stayed at 1970s motel on Barbadoes. Walked many blocks around the area (St. Asaph's Street, Hereford Street, Chester Street etc), ostensibly to check out where some of the contestants in the 1935 Shirley Temple 'double' competition used to live (I have the street addresses).
It was a sad experience--empty section neighbouring an unoccupied house, then an occupied house, then another empty section,. Nature is re-colonising the emptiness but it does not compensate for missing people who may never return. The streets are disturbing but so are the blocks of abandoned small businesses. The only ones still operating seem to be car mechanics, It is difficult to see what will bring business back.
Walking around these streets at night, looking for a place to eat, is a libel experience,
Very difficult to orientate yourself if you have only memories of how things used to be, -
Lovely, David. The very best thing is when two children become the very best of friends,

I have seen Bruce twice in concert and I am wondering about a third. The first time was in Cleveland in 1979. I had journeyed to Ohio to begin a PhD and had been there no more than three days, to win a ticket and a bus ride to the Cleveland concert in a Toledo radio station competition. This was extraordinary as I had been drawn to set off to America partly by the dark romance created by Springsteen's songs, I still have the tshirt somewhere.
Took my son to the 2007 Auckland concert and it was good but it was not quite the same as a huge concert venue filled with Americans all bellowing "Broooo..." -

shiny assed careerists who seem to be the staple of most seats in the opposition held by NZ Labour
Who exactly are you referring to? Looking at the list of Labour MPs, the number of long-stayers are few. If arses are shiny, then a good number of National MPs practically glow in the dark.

The interior is somewhat diminished by the monument to hubris in the foyer ie the giant portrait of Glenn.

Nice turn of phrase, Craig!

... and once was a student of mine ... Irrelevant, I know, but she always remembers you and is a genuine, intelligent woman. She was the only MP at the recent Big Screen event in Auckland and was there to listen.
It helps too that she provides a welcome contrast to grey-suited, pudgy male MPs (incidentally, has anyone else noted how dead Key's eyes look these days? They resemble a stunned armadillo)
