Hard News: Rape and unreason, in reply to
Or do we tell our sons not to rape??
I never had to be told.
But it's not "don't jump out of the bushes and violently sexually assault a stranger." It's make sure you have consent. Check in - and check in afterwards. Verbally express what you want. Back off at "I don't know," don't push. And yes, that goes for girls as well, but we still have a culture that teaches young men that they're Entitled.

Maybe we will see the culture change we need in our lifetimes after all?
I was really heartened to see a couple of people criticise Jones whom I'd seen run the 'sensible precautions' line themselves in the past. People change their minds between arguments, not during them. OTOH, I just had a guy on Twitter call me 'silly' for not telling my daughter not to walk at night. I love it when men lecture women about rape, like we've never really thought about it before.

Does that disqualify one?
I’ll be honest and say I don’t know. Graeme? I know it used to be the case that the candidacy stood, and if the dead person won, you had another election, but that was when you had a voting day, not a voting fortnight. It would seem logical to me that in an STV election, her votes would simply knock down to the next preference, but I’ve no idea if that’s the law.
ETA: Or I could do a quick google. Her votes "won't be counted".

A couple of my friends are quite disconcerted to discover that a candidate for council in Featherston, whom they'd both already voted for, died this morning.

I’ve talked to a couple of the City First candidates standing against me. Despite who they are standing with they seem reasonable people. It is easier being part of a team as you can deliver materials for 5 people at once
I have no problem with any of that. It's the "we're the No Party Politics Party" bit that I find... let's say "interesting".

I recently told the story of my crappest date on Twitter, when we all went clubbing and my boyfriend spent the whole evening comforting his crying ex-girlfriend. With whom he was "secretly" still sleeping.
I felt kind of guilty about it, because actually I had a pretty great time that night. Dan's friend Martin turned out to be a fantastic dancer, so we just left them to it. At one point in the evening, people actually cleared space around us and stood and watched.
I love dancing. If the choice is, "We could go home and have sex, or stay here and keep dancing,"... I'm going to trying really hard not to answer that question.

Why do they claim to be so offended? I am not at all offended by the statement
It's sweet, Dean, that you think you get to decide what is and isn't offensive. I assume you have some kind of certificate authorising this? And also some kind of Science Machine that goes 'bing' to tell you when someone's actually offended and when they're just "claiming" to be offended? Is it the same machine that lets you know Sweetman's innermost motivations? Because I'm still waiting for your evidence that he regrets what he wrote.
Nobody has tried to stop you talking. People have disagreed with you. Many of those people were men... and yet you clearly perceive yourself as being attacked by women. Why is that?

He was angry and frustrated, and in a moment of vulnerability wrote something that he now regrets.
Dean, can you back this assertion up with anything? Anything at all? Or are you arguing on this issue with your heart, and not your head?

Hard News: Jonesing, in reply to
I actually left with a better impression of him than before. Now I get where the “he can connect” stuff comes from, because he does have the gift of the gab and a great dramatic delivery.
This was my impression too, watching the live feed. I was just thinking, "Yeah, this is quite engaging, I've actually laughed a couple of times," and then he made a Fat Joke about Gerry Brownlee, and I was done.
