  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

Here's what makes me so angry about that TV3 piece: the comments of the police. Repeatedly, they say they can't lay charges because none of the victims has been "brave enough" to come forward. Brave enough. Hey, young girl who's been repeatedly told that anything that happens to her while she's drunk is her own fault, other women are getting raped because you're a coward. It takes everything you've got to get out of bed in the morning, but you're just not Brave Enough.*

These guys admit what they do. They brag about it. Everyone knows who they are. But the responsibility for stopping them? Is apparently on their victims.

*I was sexually assaulted as a teenager by a group of guys. This sort of shit, while it sounds extreme, is exactly what goes through your head.

  • Field Theory: Scary Stories,

Amnesia is by miles the scariest game I've ever played, and the biggest thing is actually the sound of 'your own' breathing as you slowly go Lovecraft-style crazy wandering around in the dark. I had to stop playing it 'headphones on lights off' because it was freaking me out too badly.

  • Up Front: The Missing Stair and the…, in reply to Miche Campbell,

A former friend used to start a “discussion/debate/argument” with me, get me good and wound up and then say “I don’t know why you’re so upset, I was only playing Devil’s advocate.”

I’m all for a nice game of Devil’s advocate as long as it’s advertised as such beforehand.

Yeah, I hate this. For a start, if you don't in some way call Devil's Advocate before you start, what you're actually doing is arguing in bad faith. Devil's Advocate is supposed to be a way of testing an argument for flaws, not deliberately pissing someone off.

But also, "Oh, I didn't really mean that, I was just playing Devil's Advocate," is a not-uncommon way of weaselling out of having just lost an argument.

  • Hard News: Moving right along?, in reply to Russell Brown,

    Best Whaleoil thread EVER! ;-)

I am delighted that he's chosen to embrace feminism, and that he and his commentariat will be actively policing men pushing women into doing things they don't want to do from now on.

I’m sorry to “trigger” your pain about her untimely death.

So... you're doubling down on really painfully obviously not knowing what the fuck you're talking about? Good to know.

  • Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli, in reply to Steven Peters,

To me the ‘affair’ isnt the issue (although it will be to many – particularly women, who, incidentally, seem somewhat invisible on this site) – its how and where it was conducted.

    Dear Steven,

    That's pretty fucking sexist.

    Yours,

    A Woman.

Sorry we haven't been more visible: we were all off at the Women's Meeting deciding what women collectively think. Women are not invisible on this site. See Hebe? She's a woman. It's true there are usually more women participating here than have in this particular thread: perhaps an indication that we care LESS about the affair, not more?
