Motel rooms may help. I am hoping this one tonight will work, with a view over the flat, grey sea in Napier (off in a trip to add more sites to http://cinemasofnz.info)

Ah, early mornings! I have sharp memories of those 5am stirrings, when I would help my father out on his milk-round. The TeasMade would be bubbling, and dawn breaking with the first bird song.
Dare I mention afternoon naps, which can be invigorating. Between 3.30-4.00pm is good.

Hard News: Friday: A happier place, in reply to
Seeing Al Green live at The Civic a couple of years ago is one of the highlights of my life. I reckon ‘Belle’ (1977) best captures the play between the sacred and the secular in his music…ie “It’s you that I want but it’s him that I need….’

I am all for observing the law and protecting civil liberties, but sometimes .. not for arrogant thugs such as these.

Hard News: The Future of Television, in reply to
I agree, Danielle. It is a cliche and a misrepresentation of what happens when we watch television. You might well argue that reading a book or staring at Youtube clips is 'passive'. I have done a sizeable bunch of research on TV audiences along the way and 'passive' they ain't -- from deep engagement with Breaking Bad, to complaining loudly about the product placement (and whiney Alice) on The Block.

Hard News: Friday Music: I like your old…, in reply to
Thanks, Alan. It is a wind-up machine but quite portable, in a natty box. I have sent away for a large supply of needles.

You want musical regression? I have just weeded out my CD collection and donated boxes to a local school fair. In their place goes a 1950s HMV portable gramophone and a collection of 1930s/40s jazz on 78s (another charity fair acquisition). Wound up the gramophone for the first time last night, bunged on Woody Herman and it was great. "Yokohama Mama" by Hari Kari and the Six Saki Sippers was not so great.
