  • Cracker: How Media Made me a Bad Person.,

Greetings, Naomi. This is a good place for a debate and I hope this one continues. Similar discussions sometimes pop up on the Kiwi Journalist FB group but people there tend to get easily offended by criticism and several leading journos have flounced off recently.

Thanks, Damion. You are doing good work. But, despite the prospect of sounding like a stuck record, it is not about journalists, journalism or even news organisations--it is the blind belief that ratings are the only measure of success. Most journos don't know how TV ratings and radio surveys work, but have to believe in them. I do harp on about this (most recently in the latest Listener) but it is time such a poor measure of what people actually do with media was scrutinised, to be found flawed and misleading,

Thanks, Simon. This is so enlightening, explaining a mess and a muddle in a manner I haven't encountered before.

  • Up Front: Neither Deep nor Wide,

Excellent travel memories! I have several old browning Brownie photos of my father floating in the Dead Sea during the war years. He would also label snaps of the locals with "A Wog" and "Another Wog". Ah, the past is another country.....

I had my own grumble about MTV and their obstructionist practices. We had a good view of Pearl Jam from the terraces until they raised their platform and completely obscured it.

But I wished that I had warned me about the sauce lurking in the pork belly thingy. One bite and it deposited itself as technicolor mess down my front. The evening proved to be stickier than I anticipated.
I was wondering if the Metro Cube was a success ... A good idea but it seemed to be ignored by the greater mass of seething teens.

I popped into The Cube a couple of times, but never at the right time to catch your appearance. But Arcade Fire were all I hoped for--Regine Chassange more to the centre stage than before, cranking up her hurdy-gurdy, the smiling African drummers, Win Butler in great form, and yes--the confetti shower. Only spoilt for a few moments by some cream of NZ youth in front of us, blocking the view, snorting coke, talking on cellphones, and paying nil attention to the music. They were have better off hanging out with bloody Beady Eye,

Thanks, Russell. Didn't know about this, when I should have.

I got to 75 movies (in a cinema, where they should be seen) last year,
