This rests on the premise that people vote for policies, and parties, and rationally. They don't, nor should they have to. Just 'cause it's called the party vote doesn't mean they're not voting - with perfect legitimacy - for people or emotions.
One of the criteria for a party's electability (?) is that it appears serious about governing. In some cases, that precludes parties making pre-election announcenents of which parties it would consider working with post-election.

Massively cool post, Keith. Thanks once again for turning the lights on. Good grief.

Meanwhile, I have something on my Freeview playlist from the TVNZ 7 show "Talk Talk", featuing an interview with Roger Shepherd, of the Dunedin band: "Flying Nun." ... yep. Did I miss something?

The Gordons: Aspic and Ham
It's all about think pig in the 80s. -
Brilliant to read your account, and to learn of your safety.
But what I really want to know is: what impact does all this have on the character of Darfield Charlie?

Speaking of elections, am I the only one confused by our own TLA election? I see hoardings approximately everywhere, and assume they're roughly geo-specific. But nobody (Electoral Commission?) has told me exactly what the new entities are that I'll be voting for, or exactly what their jurisdiction or territory is.

Don't you have to buy that Freeview thing though?
My JC Matthews 320 GB decoder/recorder used to retail at a cool $800 slides, which sounds a lot, but increases the quality of our telly viewing by a far greater margin that would the same amount spent on fancy new flatscreen wo'eva.
I think it's down about $600 now, which it should be. At times, if it's very busy doing lots of recording and viewing something else, it can get a bit clunky. But still a transformative bit of techno.
And yeah, the content is FREE! FREE I tells ya! FREEEE! So MySky is totally out of the question, especially since I choose to transgress the national obsession with 15 a side.

I'd like to see more stuff - especially cool reruns and remakes - in the graveyard slot: 12 - 6 am, for recording more than live viewing.
Maybe also FFing the ads will result in the Max Headroom commercial nirvana: b-b-blipverts!

Doesn't anyone else in here feel as if they are being spoken to as if they are soft in the head whilst watching TV?
Brickley, yep. Can't stand it.
Hence: freeview recorder. Miles of free content, view at leisure, ads over in a blinding 16x FF flash.
But: who's gonna pay for the content in the long run?

Loved the Captain Cook series on Prime, despite the breathlessly breathy ginga presenter.
And The First Australians on Maori - it's encyclopoedic or however you spell yer dipthongs.
Miles of brilliant stuff for the whole family (grief, listen to me) on 6 and 7. A whole show about DOC - wow. Pub politics, for real. And of course, Mr Brown's watchful gaze on the media - and medium - itself.
Mind, the old JC Matthews 320G Freeview recorder has changed everything. Despite the occasional clunky usability, there's now a surplus of good telly in my lounge. If you live life by the broadcasters' schedule, the options must vanish witheringly.
Brickley may have a point. Who cares the original screening venue? FTA telly failed to deliver it to her.
