Caesar wrote a little book on Teh Cherman's (as we call it at home), so did Tacitus. Had Caesar (Julius) not dealt to the Germanic tribes (crossing the Rubicon anyone?), he would not have come home all triumphant and got the top job. Though The Germans (Goths, Visigoths, Vandals and other cool names) did sack Rome 3 times, eventually at the last sacking, there wasn't much left to sack, so they went home, but they took some Christian with them and later Martin Luther... However, not without leaving some Cherman behind (ladies, I am a Goth), my Italian NZ friend is quite horrified at that mixed blood prospect (he should have worried, the mix produces exquisite uniforms and timely trains).
My Great grandfather came here due in part to the conscriptions for the Franco-Prussian war (15 years old and cannon fodder), his father was booted out of Virginia because being from Hannover he was suspected of being a King's man (George 3, who lost America). America the free!
Our pasts make NZ so very interesting, and they are not hard to trace. Did you know that NZ declared war on Germany first in WW1 (?) in Samoa. Our record in Samoa has been attrocious, my first real serious girlfriend was German Samoan, hmmmmm. -
Aha Trams-ers unite! Not since 1937 in Paris, beautiful, let's buy it! I see a tram running all the way round the waterfront from St Heliers to Pt Chev, that's it Captain, make it so.

As for Bertie, bless him, being German, technically Germany wasn't German until...history nerds, help here please.
My little glue my hand to my forehead moment comes when everyone assumes we Pakeha are always of English, Irish, Scottish decent with bad teeth, bad food, bad taste and a bent for egalitarianism...er no, at the very least, we of the not Brit import side, had coffee! -
My anscestor was from Hannover, we own ALL the English.

I seem to recall...I am 800 years old...there was an inner harbour ferry service to Hobsonville, then Hellville?. At one time Helensville was the busiest port in NZ, then the cargo would be ferried from Hellville to Queens? wharf along that river that has the Riverhead bit.
Pt Chev. was well serviced by trams and was the last stop (hence the round-about) at Coyle? Park and the tram line fragments at Western Springs. I heard, it being the last stop, many late night trams (10,00pm!) were missed, so requiring a couch-stop, (ahem).
There are legions of dusty old Bring Back The Tram-ers! out there, or there used to be. -
Eye-time is too precious, that's why I'm not going to read it. The whole world and it's keyboard, screen, paper, what-have-you wants these eyes and I don't give them lightly.
I always try to consider this when I post. -
Auckland Airport had a hovercraft that never really worked. I really think the reason why it is so expensive to get to the Airport has something to do with concession monopolies...
