Up Front: Reviewing the Election, in reply to
Higher voter turnout, like what it does achieve in Australia, over and over and over.
It's supposed to achieve a parliament that is fully representative of the people, whether they wanted to vote or not.

What would happen if we dropped the voting age to, say, 14?
Voter turnout would drop markedly.

I haven’t even touched on the Commission’s award-winning work on providing secret voting for visually-impaired people.
That was my favorite part! I'm getting misty-eyed just thinking about reading it.

As ever, this is much longer than I thought it was going to be :-)

Legal Beagle: Compensation for Teina Pora?, in reply to
I am not saying you are wrong but can you point another country or countries that have such a law.
Afraid I just don't know, I suspect there are probably some, and certainly many that don't make it quite as hard that we do.

That is why these four competing companies want to clarify the questionable legality of GlobalMode.
You want to *clarify* it? So if the result is a clear "global mode is legal" then you won't be appealing, or pushing for regulatory change because you'll have that clarity, and that's all you want?

could a decision on compensation be subject to judicial review?
I believe so, although the result would be a direction to take the decision again, at best. David Bain judicially reviewed an aspect of the process that the Government used in its earlier consideration of his claim.

Hard News: The other kind of phone tapping, in reply to
*137 if I remember rightly.
I remember 137 being "make my phone ring". I had no idea adding a * would do a call back.

I recall accidentally calling 111 using this on our home phone once.
Been a while since I tried, but 999, and 911 also work(ed) to get 111, so once, just mucking around, I clicked 3 times – I assume, with just the right amount of space between the clicks for it to count as 999 – and got a 111 operator.

Might a possible “exceptional circumstance” be the fact that the law is so badly written as to not include the current situation, which shouldn’t really be exceptional? (assuming that the absence of mention of Privy Council or Supreme Court is an oversight and not intentional?)
I note that Minister of Justice Amy Adams has reiterated her view that the requirement for exceptional circumstances doesn't apply to Pora.
