Hard News: Strange days for journalism, in reply to
You would think they could find someone a little more ‘ethnic’ than Judith Collins. It’s like in the early 1980s when the National Government had a man as Minister of Women’s Affairs.

He also did a great series of the Polish refugee children arriving and then settling in Pahiatua. Here's one of the arrival. With Beta you can zoom in and look at the expressions on the faces. Not sure how to copy image onto this thread though.

But he would have to go straight in as Minister of Justice - don't think he would have any patience for the climb up to it.

Thanks Graeme - what did you think of Greg King's performance?

It's per capita and something else - OECD?. Hopefully they will keep that bit for the programme on Thursday night.

He had found small pockets of innovative practice in programmes, sentencing, rehab etc. His argument is that NZ is not so different to the US and our rate of incarceration is second only to the them. So we can learn from what some are doing there to address it.

I just caught the 'gold card special' bus into town - packed with those over 65. For that cohort it is a very sensible card and many make good use of it. Simple ID only and most drivers don't even ask their elderly passengers for it. In Wellington it can be used 9-3 or all day weekends on trains and buses. Any threats to withdraw it will only increase support for Winston Peters.

I went to the final taping of the Court Report last night at Victoria University's law school. Greg King, taking a break from being a celebrity defence lawyer at the court across the road, gave an impassioned plea for reform of NZ's justice system and changing our culture of criminalising people. He's spent a few months in the US looking at innovative ways of doing things. When Linda Clark asked why we do things the way we do in NZ he answered, 'Because New Zealand is stupid!'
I hope some influential people listen.

Hard News: Moving from frustration to disgust, in reply to
When I was on the Onslow board we had some 'robust' discussions about zone boundaries. From memory the Ngauranga border was done in close collaboration with Newlands College (and the Min of Ed). At that time Onslow was growing faster than Newlands and this was done to help Newlands. Newlands now has a zone too.
I am amused to hear the principal of Wgtn Coll on the news this morning being critical of schools that gerrymander zones.

Getting people off benefits means implementing a new re-assessment process designed to disqualify them. This is what the Cameron government in the UK has been doing flat out for the last couple of years. Pay a large multi-national (ATOS) to design a computer system with a tick box type of questionnaire (can you walk?) that takes no account of the daily realities and nuances of stuff like mental health conditions or being on chemotherapy. Design the system to have a rigid pass fail rate, erring on the side of failure to get enough points to qualify for a benefit. Kick large numbers of people off welfare. Get a great big bonus from the government for achieving the targets. Too bad that the appeals process clogs all the courts and people die trying to get justice and support.
