  • Hard News: Higgs Live!,

    I wonder how the Big Bang Theory* will cover it?

    *TV comedy about physicists for those who haven't discovered it - had Steven Hawking on a recent show.

  • Hard News: Higgs Live!, in reply to Joe Wylie,

    I don't care what anyone else thinks, but I am still quite keen on the idea of cold fusion. It maybe could be just around the corner, and solve all sorts of problems.

    PS I also like Comic Sans. And use it a lot as it is very good for a diverse audience. Sometimes I apologise and people look at me puzzled. When I don't they glare disdainfully.

  • Hard News: Who'd have thought?,

    One child went to a uniform school and one to a non uniform requiring one. I definitely preferred the later. Uniforms require a huge outlay at the beginning and it has to be exactly the right thing bought from the right place (usually the school) so no way to discount, and repeated as child grows. Unflattering for most body shapes and impractical in a changeable climate. Also required expensive drycleaning. Whereas non uniform clothes, including shoes, were just everyday clothes often from Farmers, Hallensteins and Hannahs, and adjustable for all weathers. The majority of kids wore a more-or-less uniform of jeans, shorts and tshirts. But ranged from top hats and evening wear to full drag. Uniforms also tended to get washed less often than ordinary clothes and a roomful of damp wool on a wet winter day is not pleasant.

    I remember one teacher saying how much she preferred teaching in a non uniform school. Not only did she not have to waste any time on enforcement, but it was much simpler to identify and get to know the kids and easier to recall them when talking to parents. Much easier to confuse them when they were a sea of grey.

  • Hard News: For want of some purpose,

    This should probably have been attached to an earlier thread (so apologies, though topic still relevant) but Giovanni's blog on the Metro article on Auckland schools and league tables etc is attracting an interesting discussion including comments from Metro editor.

  • Hard News: For want of some purpose,

    On The Panel this afternoon Jane Clifton puzzled at the strong reaction to the closure of TVNZ7. She didn't think anyone would watch cheaply made talking heads television. And when persuaded by the other conservative panelist that they do, she airily assumed that those programmes would be picked up by other channels. (She didn't seem to get the point that having a non-commercial public service channel is an important thing in itself and is valued by a large proportion of the citizenry.) That from a television reviewer, and a columnist from a publication which refused to print TV7s listings.

  • Capture: Ice Rink Luck, in reply to Kumara Republic,

    A permanent ice skating rink was one of Kerry Prendergast's promises when she first stood for Mayor of Wellington in 2002. It never eventuated. However, last winter there was a temporary one - which is probably much like the current Auckland one - on Queen's wharf. It was very popular, and anyone could watch the action on the rink. But as it was quite expensive to actually use it raised questions about the privatisation of public space.

  • OnPoint: Pants != Journalism,

    That court room is full of large portraits of the luminaries of the judiciary wearing all sorts of fancy gowns and wigs - yet they make a fuss about a journalist wearing colourful trousers!

  • Hard News: Strange days for journalism, in reply to chris,

    The male National Party Minister of Women's Affairs (I think it was Jim McLay) was married to a woman so was that sufficient perspective to have the job? Don't think so.
