  • Hard News: Women and their representations,

It's very much a list of the late 20th century. What about the missionary wives and the wives of politicians (like Janet Fraser) who influenced the men who were the public figures. What about Princess Te Puea and Elsie Locke? What about those who shape the literary imagination of NZ's children such as Margaret Mahy, Linley Dodd and Beverley Randall?

I'm not commenting on the main proposition, but there is a complication in the argument in that a few of the women who do get to positions of power immediately pull up the ladder behind them and become worse bullies than the men they replaced.

Where would any TV programme be without a valued audience?

OK - here's a serious media question that would involve female expertise in their role as professional television reviewers. Why don't the television reviewers in many of the major dailies and magazines ever mention TVNZ7? They write about obscure programmes on the far reaches of Sky but never seem to review anything on TVNZ7. Is that due to political or editorial pressure?

Maybe TV is finishing in a couple of weeks and this question will be redundant, but if there is an ongoing campaign for public broadcasting, which I hope there is, will television reviewers be able to publicly support it?

And Crown Lynn has many possibilities: New Zealand history; ceramics - eg collecting, science, business; crafts; food (which is always in the news from reality TV cooking shows to endless obesity stories). As I said, it's how you frame the subjects. I would even suggest Jackie as a regular panellist as she has so much expertise on so many topical topics - she's sort of the Rosemary McLeod of PublicAddress. And I'm sure Danielle and Emma would be among many others who could be called on for their media expertise or glamour as required.

It's also about how you decide on subjects. I think Jackie's suggestions upthread are perfectly valid topics for critical media attention.

Sometimes it takes a bit more effort to get those of 'us' who are are not from the dominant white middle-class, middle-aged, able-bodied, etc male demographic into the studio. As it is to get more diverse representation in politics, business, academia, encyclopedias or most places of power. It's called affirmative action and it is about assessing expertise differently, not tokenism.

    Interesting blog post thanks, Sacha.

Yes I know it is complex about who watches when and why but when there is no reflection of the diversity that makes up society it just gets boring.

I'm a great fan of the Court Report and the stand out programme for me recently was the one on the parent carers case. No men in flash suits - just a couple of mothers, some young female family members, and a nice motherly lawyer. With host Linda Clark it became a chat about the impact of the case on real people's lives.

I haven't been keeping stats but I would disagree about gender balance - my estimate would be about 80/20 in favour of men. It is not a problem unless you want women to watch/engage with the programme in bigger proportions than this.

I'm sure Russell and the team have tried hard to get women to participate. Their lack of success reflects other common issues that this thread has revealed: the assumption that media experts are predominantly male; and that women do not see themselves as experts and certainly do not want to get up in public and talk about their expertise.
