Great stuff, David. No need for a disclaimer along the lines of "No elements in this story can be regarded as autobiographical'?
Christs College, eh! I have been to several conferences there and made a point of ignoring the Do Not Walk On The Grass signs. If I had a pocket-knife handy, I may well have carved something offensive on the back of the pews.

Gutted I missed the Maori game
Bloody marvellous game. As good as when they beat the British Lions a couple of years back. Lovely, swirling rugby--with Gear, Sweeny, Messam, McAlister just superb.

2. People who don't like yodelling are... wrong.
Danielle: oh, damn--just when I thought we were music soul-mates. Yodelling should be regarded as a crime against humanity ;-)

the Communist Party's anti-comics crusade
In respect of the British campaign, this is well documented in Martin Barker (1984), A Haunt of Fears: The Strange History of the British Comics Campaign (Pluto Press)

There are other media alarmists about--such as John Terris and his Band of Five Followers in the Hutt Valley. They used to send me their newsletter addressed to "The Rev Geoff Lealand". This caused great mirth amongst my colleagues. Delivery stopped when I sent a newsletter back, with a message 'Unsolicited mail from Satan"!

Ah, Ari Sigman! I always thought there was something very dodgy about him. Not a researcher nor an advocate, but a zealot you picks 'evidence' (of often highly dubious origins) to reinforce his prejudices. Still, he manages to fool many people--I remember Peter Calder getting quite starry-eyed about him.

Don't go, Giovanni. We can learn a lot from you. I know so little about soccer--don't even know the offside rule!

Silvio Berlusconi can you hear me? Silvio Berlusconi your boys took a hell of a beating! Your boys took a hell of a beating!”
Bloody hell! Welcome to Hyperbole Central!
Heard the news on RNZ 'round 6am. First reaction was disbelief but now I am a believer. Nevertheless, it does not take the gloss of a splendid rugby test match on Saturday night.

..and didn't that 50 years of Tele get off to a good start last week.
Yes, it was excellent, especially in respect of not privileging the history of any particular broadcaster...and if I can take the liberty of promoting my research site one more time, there is a discussion developing at http://www.historyoftvinnz.com
