Because you're secretly in love with... Michael York?
Pale blue jerseys would be never be innocent again!

I know it is corny but I do love sending congratulatory messages to newly-crowned PhDs, as Dr .... , I presume?

Oh, and the 'Dr' line was meant to be a wry joke
..and it can lead to misunderstandings--like the time we had frenzied knocking on the door of our Mt. Victoria flat at 3am. Opened the door to find a neighbour begging me, "My boyfriend has over-dosed. Can you help him quickly". When I replied. "Why are you asking me?", she replied, "Well, you are a doctor, aren't you?".

Or ChookBooks, which would give it local flavour? Or NookieBooks, to cater for a particular clientele?

...and written with insight and great intelligence. I had conversations with Chris when he was Writer in Residence at Waikato and went to to a talk he did about the curious history of Blue Smoke. I am waiting for my copy to arrive, with some eagerness.

@ Andin. Hang on, and back up the horses a bit! I prefer 'notable inclusions' to 'notable exceptions'--This Is Not My Life, Big Bang Theory, Media 7, Broadwalk Empire, Madmen, The Middle, Outrageous Fortune et etc.
I would recommend you read the recent New York Times (September 12 2010) piece by A.O. Scott , 'Are Films Bad, or Is TV Just Better?' -
Ah, Playdate. Part of my yoof!

Of course, my livelihood does not depend on publishing (my children would be living off mud pies and watercress, if I did) but co-authorship further subdivides any returns. I presume the same division of proceeds applies to non-fiction but I was mightily pleased with my last writing effort (a chapter on the 'Peter Jackson Era' for a forthcoming history of NZ film), when I was paid $2500 for 8,500 words--the most I have ever earned from one publication.
Academics don't usually get paid for publication (and blush a bit when they do): we do it as part of the job, because we want to; for vain-glory; because we hope someone, somewhere will read it. There is other unpaid labour too--I just spent many hours reading and commenting on a humungous book ms, for which I get 3 books as a reward.

We pretty much kept out the bozos from the HCC and Environment Waikato but will have to wait to see if Julie Hardaker will stand the test as Mayor. Getting rid of the V8s (Hamilton's contribution to global warming) would be good but she will be up against a mob of petrol-heads.
Good result for Auckland too.
On a different track, there is no place around here to talk rugby. Where I can plug the case for Stephen Donald's return to the ABs, after his superb game against Otago?
