If you have space, apple cucumbers are dead easy to grow. My broad beans are a bit disappointing this spring but I trying soya beans (edamame) again. I tend to grow staple veggies + one novelty item--this year it is capers.

Even my close friends and family think I’m joking when I tell them I like Home and Away.
No need for apologies. I occasionally catch a glance at it and marvel at its seemingly endless supply of young blondes. The only programme I really cannot excuse anyone watching is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, with vile Ty.

I’m rather tickled that they will (unfortunately only temporarily) have to live in North Wales, a fate that I’d happily wish on my worst enemy.
Oh, come on now--there is some damn fine country around there, as well as the real curiosity of Portmeirion. Personally, I think they should be living on a housing estate.

Any thoughts about us contributing to the upkeep, Russell?

I'd also love to know how many public sector PASers out there, have had to pay for their professionally relevant "contact with the world" out of their own pockets or constrained and tightly audited budgets?
Well, I did have to pay my way, once again, to the recent SPADA conference ($660). But many academics have the privilege of conference funding--my university gives me a lump sum every three years, which allows for around one overseas conference a year. Some of my colleagues regard such funding as a right; I regard it as a privilege (I know many school teachers who would benefit from such opportunities).
We do need to justify such funding in terms of delivering conference papers and subsequent publication but it is certainly a great aspect of academic life.
Russell: whilst we are talking about funding things, any thoughts on my suggestion about contributing financially to PA?

As an aside here, I have just heard that Sufan Stevens will be touring NZ in Feb 2011. Things are just getting better....

Russell: given the cost of running the shop, and the new paint job, is it possible to make a contribution to the on-going costs of PA--something like the modest auto payment I make to the Werewolf site. I would be happy to do so.

I have never forgiven myself for being a touch rude about your spelling back in the early days and before I knew better and realized it is perfectly fine. One thing I sometimes have problems with is distinguishing between zero and 'O' in passwords.

Hope you are having a quiet Saturday, Russell, as. SPADA did get more than it two bobs value out of you. Despite the programme initially looking rather thin (and no David Putnam), there was some good stuff–such as the sessions on Japanese co-prods and the Aussie film industry, and the really fun Paki Up one.
No problems with the new regime for me but it does fill up all the corners on my iPod.
