  • Hard News: Any excuse for a party,

Breakers are 13 to 5 after the first quarter. Great too not to have to listen to obnoxious Aussie commentators.

  • Hard News: Any excuse for a party,

But Geoff: as an Associate Professor of Media Studies, surely it’s your duty to watch the coverage?

I will watch the Breakers and then go out to see In A Better World (a highly recommended Danish film). That is doing my duty.

When they televise the Royal Divorce, I might watch ;-)

  • Hard News: Any excuse for a party,

Please, please reassure me that there will be other people here NOT watching. Just when I thought PAS might be a royal wedding-free zone.

  • Up Front: Home is Where the - Ooo, shiny!,

Motivation and some organisation is also necessary for making the best of an academic life, which operates on a form of virtue ethics rather than time-keeping or time-serving. I always have problems with taking the annual leave I am entitled to, as there is no sharp division between work and leisure components as there is for most folk--and the so-called ‘university year’ of ftf teaching is 24 weeks out of 52. It’s a grand life!

  • Hard News: The Ladi is a champ,

At $20 bucks the Kings Arms is often the best ticket in town.

A damn pity that the Felice Brothers gig never happened there.

  • Hard News: Friday Visions,

I still don’t own an ACDC record

…and for your peace of mind, you should keep it that way. This ain’t singing; it is very loud gargling!

Jeez–we have the dubious delights of ZZ Top and Good Charlotte playing here this weekend.

I am out of here, bundle of student essays under my arm, to escape the bloody V8s (Waikato’s contribution to the peak oil crisis?) and the roving packs of nongs in silly caps.

All you folk have a great weekend.

  • Hard News: Friday Visions,

Oh, Gawd! I am distracting myself whilst I mark student essays and I just read the following sentence (sic) Most of France movies are speaks French. Admittedly from an ESL student but bloody hell!

  • Hard News: Friday Visions,

Kids liking the same music as their parents. That's just..... wrong, no

It is possible...and, indeed, a source of shared pleasure, as with books, films, TV programmes. Catherine Rose (17) and I both like Death Cab for Cutie, Arcade Fire, Tom Lehrer (and more) but disagree on Bright Eyes and Mindless Self Indulgence. Introduce your children to your music, just as you would introduce them to books (but keep your house a ACDC-free zone!)

  • Cracker: Send in the Clowns,

Saw that too. About as plausible as the Listener's readership figures.

  • Cracker: Send in the Clowns,

    And here it is mentioned.

The Open Letter is getting some good attention. Pleased to see how some of my academics colleagues have pulled finger on this issue.

Just posted a comment regarding the dim-witted New Zealand Horrid editorial. They obviously understand zilch about ratings.
