Another recent, sad death of a NZ poet was Ken Arvidson. A real gent who taught in the English Dept at the University of Waikato.
Excellent Media 7 last night, Russell.

Slightly off topic, but given we are talking about the future of media institutions, there is a Forum on the Future of Public Television in NZ at Victoria Uni next Wednesday (Council Chamber, 8.30-5.10). Sessions on policy developments, alternative funding strategies, sustaining local content, FTA into the future etc... Features politicos (but not Coleman), producers and academics.

Incidentally, good topic for Media 7!

I share some of the misgivings about the number of student churning through journalism/Media Studies/journalism courses in NZ but are significant differences between these variations of media teaching: journalism courses tend to emphasise vocationalism, with a stress on print media (only belatedly are they beginning to embrace electronic newsgathering, Web journalism etc); Media Studies draws off NCEA Media Studies and tends to have an academic/theoretical focus--taking the place of where English & Sociology used to be in Humanities/Social Sciences; communication studies tend to have a PR/corporate emphasis. Of course, the growth of such subjects in the tertiary sector is a consequence of the bums-on-seats of the educational regime, but also from student desire. Media Studies, for example, can be at the cutting edge of new technology--not just emphasising the 'how' of digital technology, but also the 'why/when/where' questions.
For more skillful arguments than mine, check out the Manifesto For Media Education site at www.manifestoformediaeducation.co.uk

As another trustee of NZ ON Screen, I will also avoid that part of the territory.
I know, from colleague's experiences, that the TVNZ archive sometimes charges hideous amounts for access to historical footage for academic purposes. I do think there may be irreconcilable differences in respects of commercial objectives vs open access in any new set-up.
In respect of the Film Archive, their most recent, ancillary initiative-- New Zealand Film: An Illustrated History (Te Papa Press. to be launched 4 July) is great. It will be a most handsome book. -
Hard News: Cheer Germ, in reply to
Can I just point out not everyone gets a long weekend, and yes, I am quite bitter about it.
But hearing your dulcet tones on the old steam radio makes the weekend so much better ;-)

A three-day weekend: hoping to be inspired to finish my book chapter in the surrounds of the Michael King House at Opoutere. One of the very best things my university has done--buying King's house and making it available to staff to rent, and write in.

I will have a good hoik, in sympathy, as a fellow sufferer.

In Auckland, I think drivers’ awareness of cyclists has actually improved since last year’s cycling deaths made safety an issue.
I hope so. One cyclist killed and another seriously injured within Hamilton city in the past two days.

, motorway patrol cops–in cars–wear helmets
Maybe we could get V8 drivers and rally drivers to persuade their petrol-head fans to start wearing helmets?
