  • Up Front: P.A. Story,

Heyas. I'm still going... though I've worked out which bit I'll be using for the OGB, I still want to finish the story, which has a startlingly coherent actual plot. Sort of. In a way. Also strongly tempted to try to record this as a full-cast audiobook the next time I'm in Wellington...

Anyway. We're at the witch's place. Where is the Winkie of St Richie? Hidden/lost/gone walkabout, etc. I'll admit I've now got so lazy that last night I thought, "Well, it could be X, but you know what? I bet someone at PAS can come up with something better..."

  • Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Sure, but for some weird reason I feel that is cheating.

I really did want Megan to come up to the Blend with me. For many reasons, but importantly so I could introduce her to Bart. But then, I really enjoy introducing "cool and interesting" people to each other.

  • Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to webweaver,

I'm in agreement with Craig in that I would never post something online that I wouldn't say to someone's face.

See, I do, absolutely, all the time. Case in point: yesterday a nurse taking bloods asked me what my new tattoo meant. And while I've been completely up front about my sexual identity on-line, there was no way in hell I was going to tell her I was a BDSM sub, because I didn't know whether, after that, I would receive competent health care or basic courtesy. She might have been absolutely fine, but it wasn't a risk I was prepared to take.

Do people see the pseudonyms as part of the problem, that we can say stuff without obvious comeback in our offline lives?

If someone is using a consistent pseudonym - so people know when they're talking to the same person, and can tag the behaviour to the name - I've got no problem with it at all. Yes, pseudonymity protects arseholes, but

    - it's way more important that it be available to protect victims of domestic violence, rape victims, kinky people, sex workers - people who are vulnerable

    - just how big of a jerk should someone have to be on the net before you feel it's justifiable to have people turning up on their doorstep, or at their workplace?

What I want to know is where is my non-critical metro soul mate?

    *cough*

  • OnPoint: Easy as 1, 2, 22.8 billion, in reply to icehawk,

I don't want to dismantle superannuation, but financially your generation did indeed screw over mine.

Icehawk, Bart is younger than you are.

  • Up Front: How About Now?, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

Nice story in the New York Times about the first round of same-sex weddings over the weekend.

Srsly, same-sex wedding photos always make me cry, and I make no apology for that. For me, this is putting meaning and significance back into marriage.

Nice one! How did you make the balls so round?

We have an egg-shaped plastic container, like the ones Leggs pantihose used to come in. I can't remember where it came from, but it's perfect for daleks. My partner is now adamant we need to buy a plunger and an egg-whisk.

  • Southerly: Things to be Grateful For: A…, in reply to Paul Campbell,

I like "sno-dalek" of course you need a toilet plunger and an egg-beater rather than a carrot

There was a rather testy discussion about my egg-beater. Snow Dalek.

One of our kids is "trapped" at his friend Rowan's after gaming all night. The other is fast asleep. We have just decided, my partner and I, that we're going to go out and build a snow-dalek anyway. Though I would prefer it to actually stop snowing for a bit...
