Hard News: When the Weather is the News, in reply to
Woodburners are banned in Christchurch, right? Too much of a smog problem..
"Clean air approved" logburners are still okay, but you can't install new ones unless there was already a non-approved fire/logburner you're replacing. This was such a Big Deal real estate agents would always mention it when we were looking at houses. "Now, you'll notice there's a fireplace..."

There'll also be video of David H's extraordinary presentation, and a general mash-up of the evening.
Yay, because I was in the wings for David's, and have only seen it from side-on. And I was trying really hard not to laugh too hard in case I distracted him.
Also, I would like it to be generally understood, without me having to come anywhere near explaining it, why [redacted] now reminds me of Murray McCully.

This is true. Megan is not "Megan". At no point does "Megan" get kicked out of any bars.
No, srsly, Megan isn't "Megan". But yous all knew that.

I... feel guilty about being whiny now. But while I was reading the comments here, there was a big thump, as enough snow fell off our roof to bury our back doorstep. I was going to describe the depth in our front yard, then got distracted by wondering why snow is one of those things only ever measured in inches. Yes, my whole family's been sealed in the Warm Room of the house for two days, why do you ask?
I have learned something from all this, though: don't keep all the snow gear in the garage. The garage door tilts, and will not open with a foot of snow up against it. And where's the spade for removing the snow? Yeah...

Southerly: One Hundred and Thirty-one…, in reply to
Wind tunnels too; Hereford St east of the Square used to be foul.
It really was, which is a pity, cause there were some good shops down there.

is they build a structure that could take another 13 metres at some later stage when people’s mood changes towards the concern around earthquakes.
It's not just about fear, though. It's also about letting light into the city, and particularly around the Square, which was quite literally over-shadowed by some of those hotels. If you want another 13 metres, build slightly further out from the newly-ensmallened CBD.
When I see the building-height sketches of the proposed CDB, what strikes me immediately is that the highest point is the spire of the Cathedral. That feels right. It's also what the community said it wanted.

Hard News: London's Burning, in reply to
I remember we joked, yes joked, about there being no electrical plugs in stock all over London.
Jean, my friend Heather is currently joking, about getting a bunch of friends together and heading to Knightsbridge to see if the looters make it as far as Harrod's.

Teresa May on cuts to police budgets, last year:
The home secretary, Theresa May, has dismissed fears that deep spending cuts could undermine the ability of the police to tackle possible civil unrest, and insisted the British did not respond to austerity by rioting on the streets.
I have a very dear friend in Clapham. She's just posted this from down the road. At some point she's going to go to bed and I'm going to spend the rest of the day fretting until she gets up again.

Ha! I was the one going "I'm tired, I wanna go home...". But I did have a fabulous time, and it was lovely to meet new people. Even if I can't solemnly promise to remember all your names. I might now be sitting in a cafe in Vulcan Lane feeling a teeny bit seedy.

Hard News: Friday Fun with Brickface, in reply to
That was a really moving, challenging room for me to be in. Clearly I carried off my staunchness so well that at one point Bart and Russell were pretty much holding me up between them. Amazing. So glad I could be there.
