Detritus 'fer sure. From the stranded MV Rena on the Astrolobe Reef (40kms offshore in the Bay of Plenty); a ship which finally broke in two in the weekend storm.

  • Capture: Roamin' Holiday,

My holiday snaps (watch this space). Just back from a couple of days in Bowentown (the isthmus that extends beyond Waihi Beach) and spent much of Monday afternoon salvaging 20kg bags of milk powder (and much heavier when saturated) from a shattered shipping container from the Rena. Especially delightful when you hoisted a bag on your shoulder, for it to leak down your front and through your hair. Stunk of eau de Fonterra for the next day. This morning the beach was a mess of sawn timber and logs.

In real estate-speak, we now have inside/outside flow with doors to the deck finally installed. No more crawling out the kitchen window for my daughter or going out the back door and up the stairs for us. Maybe it will stop Josephine watching that bloody Living Channel so much!

They are still there, down the Camellia Walk and at the head of the pool where the entrances to the Chinese, Japanese, English, American, Indian and Italian gardens begin. Much posing for photo ops going on around them yesterday.

Another one, of the Renaissance Garden. If you have never visited the Hamilton Gardens, you ought to. Something quite extraordinary wandering from the English Garden, to the Japanese Garden, to the American Modernist Garden to the Italian Garden to the Maori Garden. Three new areas are being built: Surrealist Garden, Tudor Garden and Tropical Garden. Wonderful productive/sustainable gardens too.

Yes, a wonderful summer for hydrangeas. We have wonderful white blooms, and a cerise and deep blue bush growing side by side--which ought not happen as acidic soils produce one colour and alkaline soils produce the other.
