so on board with you re Cat Empire, utter utter kak. and (boo) I missed Roy, was busy threading LEDs through some angel wings, bloody Splore, which promptly fell out when the missus shrugged them on. I was well happy.
my best time was catching MC Slave's DJ set at the beach hut, that was a jolly good time for people needing a jolly good time. and I enjoy Earl, but sometimes really wish he'd shut up. we know what dub section of a 12'' when we hear it without the lecture. v pleased I saw him at Conch a few days earlier.
as for Scruff, my tune of the day was Quincy Conserve's, Alright in the City. at volume.but mate, I was over dragging myself up hills and standing at the back of queues all night. and a big board with the program on would be mighty handy. good vibe to the place though, very kiwiburnish.

I had an odd day, wandered as much as possible to see as many acts as possible, then began to feel rather disconnected when I struggled to hear what people were getting all excited by.
did enjoy Jungle's two hits but and would vote St Vincent as act of the day by several straights, even if my body was nearing collapse by 10pm.
I thought that Future Islands guy was hilarious with his "let's rip this shit up'' intros to what sounded like early Human League out-takes - not to mention his depression advisory - almost felt like he was fronting the wrong band.
enjoyed Heavy early on, they were having a fine ol' time and the heat was yet to kick in. bits of Royal Blood were fun and they get full credit for giving it a good college try, but I left with the impression of an event made up of acts that would largely fill the early to mid-afternoon BDO slots.
very fetching crowd though. top marks there. -
with all due respect to the Fits fullas, I think it's Shayne who's doing all the rocking there. I would love to have seem him banging that out with a truly kickarse rhythm section.
it's a time and place thing I guess and while as Grant notes above, video tech has come a long way, the musicianship on show around these parts has come even further. my old chops wouldn't come anywhere near to passing muster now. the punk DIY vibe was brilliant, but a few lessons wouldn't have gone amiss...also, Turnaround in the sun sounds like bliss. I saw Norman Jay at that 'orrible bar on High St across from De Bretts a few years back and he was a bit house heavy for mine. there wasn't much in the way of old soul/ funk/ reggae.

otherwise, yeah you did miss out. it was a rambunctious evening of high spirits with an added dose of something I haven’t quite identified. over the four weeks it’s felt like it meant something even if it’s simply a reflection of the spirit that Matthew C has imbued in the place. further thought is necessary. anyway, would have been grand to have seen you there. -
was anyone at the last of Lawrence Arabia's gigs at Golden Dawn last night? Was the first time I've ever banged out the national anthem in a pub with gusto then bonus points for kicking off with the Dog's Show theme and closing with the Goodnight Kiwi tune. Another round of guest vocalists a-go-go too, Liam Finn (banged out a stonking Counting the Beat, my song of the night), Dave Dobbyn (two tracks incl Outlook for Thursday - apparently under duress but he kicked out the jams), Don McGlashan (Marsha and The Heater), then Neil Finn (History Never Repeats and I Got You).
Full credit to the lads for learning 65 tracks in a month.
Damn good times. -
I twaddled off on my annual junk shop circuit thru Thames, Te Aroha, Morrinsville and Huntly this week and reaped a fine bounty.
most lucrative – not that I sell – was a minty copy of the Underdogs (best known for Sitting in the Rain) album Wasting Our Time.

but also delighted to get equally minty 7s of Johnny Devlin’s Straight Skirt and the Deuce’s Hone Heke – I’d pitch them both to Lawrence Arabia for tomorrow night. Anyone who hasn’t caught one of these shows at Golden Dawn has missed out.
as for managing my music, I find some hefty shelving units and ample floor space does the job most effectively.
