I decided not to even wish I had gone to the BDO this year, unlike the last couple of years of claiming to have wanted to go, then not. I realised pretty early on that the only reason I even want to go anymore is to be able to tell stories about who and what I saw afterwards-the music itself has become almost peripheral for me.

Though it depends on one's chosen lifestyle, but I doubt Ms Allen has cheap tastes, somehow.
That means she is in danger of becoming another irrelevant celebrity living on past glories indulging in crass displays of wealth beyond her means.
Or she could live within the means afforded by her income, which would be a whole lot better that 80% of the global population.
Jeez, could you guys possibly look for a fact or two to go on before cranking up your grand chorus of disapproval? Your-tutting is keeping people awake in neighbouring countries.

Yeah, what are you all trying to be, her dad? I think that roles taken. The pink dress was so un-BDO main stage it was perfect, and the sing-a-long break up songs, accompanied by thousands of youngsters for whom the sentiment was like, fo' real, ya' know, kind of made my day. I was young once too, rumour has it. Although my break up album was The Cure Disintegration, so this is way more constructive. FU and your crew! If only someone had told me...

I'm not tutting about her tastes at all. She should fully go for it, I would.
There's a lot of marching powder just crying out to get snorted...I defer to Simon's expertise - my assumption on money from hit singles is mostly based around peoples biographies, where it seems that the first hit doesn't pay back the advance. Maybe if it's a number one for weeks all over the world, and they had a good manager and contract it's different?

@Rich. Of course every case varies hugely and it comes down, as you say, to how much you've spent getting there. But I'm talking in isolation of all that, a reasonable self written hit will provide a gross income that viably could set a person up for a comfortable lifestyle.
However, in the real world, it rarely does because of the variables and the way the many labels contractually structure artist recoupment.

Well, there's even more to envy - I think if you checked her accounts you'd find that much of what looks like living it up large is actually earning her a sizable part of her fortune. Wherever you see a non-model modelling, you are seeing a paid endorsement. Paid endorsements do not come cheap - and they're not going to pay her off in $5,000.00 handbags either. I would be curious to see how the dollars from this campaign stack up against her earnings from music. They'd both be very large sums.

Very, very sad. I remember seeing her in concert in Wellington with her sister years ago and I treasure their records. Such a beautiful blend of voices.

Mmm, probably not, though it was faintly Chanel-esq in the clean edges and space suit lines. Not that she couldn't afford to trash a $10,000 dress but usually a big house like Chanel wlll have a lot of say how you wear their clothes, who sees you, what you're doing in them, what you say when wearing them etc. I don't think Chanel would agree to let their stuff be worn during one of her concerts, though I can see they would be prepared to pay her millions to wear their stuff in their editorial campaigns and red carpet events.
Weird world, celebrity endorsements. I can remember reading Michael Jordan made more endorsing Nikes than every factory worker since the dawn of Nike had been paid collectively. Is that possible?

Possibly... but I'm guessing not, as none of the articles about the BDO said she was dressed in Chanel, which would be pretty important to them - they would want very staged, scripted photo ops to accompany any appearance of their product. If she's wearing Chanel, they would really, really want her press releases to say so, and they'd make sure the press said so as well.
But I'm pretty sure she embodies pretty much everything the company is looking for - a ratio of 85% cute to 15% edge, and she does look great in their product. Chanel has carefully been distancing itself from the image of the elegant but deeply middle aged and terribly conservative. Lily Allen is a good choice.
God, I used to spend a lot of money on clothes. I once spent a month's salary on a dress. I must have been insane.

Felt a bit naughty being the one posting it here, but I was so excited, just had to share it. The thought of him planning ahead to do a concert with his mates fills me with great joy, and I am just a fan.

No, it's more that any accompanying press is about her dress - or in the shots where she's not wearing their clothes - their handbags or sunglasses. So you get all these "paparazzi" shots where she's shopping - carrying Chanel handbag and shopping bags - dressed in Chanel on the red carpet etc.
Chanel would probably be only too happy to have Lily Allen perform in their outfits, but there would be carefully, specifically spelled out stipulations as to the prominence of their product in relation to her music - and I doubt that she would agree to let her music be overshadowed by the clothes.
But who knows? Things change - this is how the endorsement world would have worked years back, but who knows. And it depends on the product... Janis Joplin was seen so much with a bottle of Southern Comfort in her hand the company bought her a Lynx coat. Though that was far from an official endorsement deal.
But Chanel... there would be millions of dollars exchanging hands for the deal, not to mention the insane freebies she'd get, I think they would be very specific about how and when their product was showcased. One thing's for sure - she is not only going to be not wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars on those clothes and accessories, she is going to become very rich being seen in them instead.
