What were the last words the drummer said before he was kicked out of the band?

The Taiko drum trio that has played up at Gyoza King upon occasion, truly moving with noodles and Asahi! I seem to remember a rather fantastic drum solo at a Ronny Jordan gig at the town hall in the early ninties. And Herb, Herb the ginseng drummer, well, enough said! The beat does indeed go on...

I watched an old Band documentary recently and decided that I would like to be adopted by Levon Helm.
I saw that one too--along with one on Janis Joplin (dipsy) and another on Buddy Holly (especially interesting on the events leading up to the plane crash). All on the Documentary Channel?
What was particularly interesting about The Band was how 'organic' their music was, in that they did not appear to listen to other music, nor actively search for references. The doco was a little coy about Richard Manuel's suicide (have you ever heard "Richard Manuel" by Drive By Truckers?)

It's always interested me that we have this whole South American influence in Welly, just because somebody chartered a boat called "Cuba" to check out the site of Wellington in 1840.
You guys do know that Cuba is an island nation in the Caribbean... about 700 or 800 km from South America.... right? It's not even Central America.

In an era of overblown musical excess the Band were a breath of fresh air and the only group of musicians that deserved to be called The Band. Shame it all finished so messily.

No, they can be really far apart... the distances are enormous. Cuba is a Caribbean nation near North America, Mexico is part of North America and Central America is comprised of: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
My Grandfather was a survey engineer for the railways in the 1890s and took some amazing pictures of his travels through the areas.
One of the most interesting and poignant things he noted was the miles and miles of wooden boardwalks (in Caracas I think) built by the indigenous people, who were never allowed to set foot on the boardwalk they'd built, but had to walk on the muddy road with the horses.

And I'm sure looking forward to the drumming during the Echo and The Bunnymen set next week at Laneways. Pete De freitas, who died at 27 in a car accident, will be sorely missed.

Oh yes.
At Camp A Low Hum (which has just wrapped up for 2010; musical highlights were Signer, Orchestra of Spheres, The Dodos, Denim Owl and a ukelele player called Dent May) in 2008 a petition calling for the ritual disembowling of just such a person was circulated and widely supported. The drummer obviously hadn't realised that the wrath of hundreds of tight- panted men who have had their quiet enjoyment of other similarly-dressed men singing about girls disturbed could be so violent.

Of course it may actually be a good thing that the drum solo goes on and on because often after the drum solo comes something even worse.........the bass solo!!!

In relation to on-stage band performances, I really have no problem with solos of any description as long as they don't overstay their welcome. Get in, get out, don't mess about.

Or that their references were to things completely outside their own popcultural framework - they were very 'steampunk', to use an anachronistic term, in the way they used the nineteenth century for fodder.

Just as an aside--I am in Dunedin Wed-Friday and I notice that Marianne Dissard (with Flip Grater & Delany Favidson) are playing there on Thursday night. Worth going to, do you reckon?
