Radiation: Signing off, moving on

Sadface. Thank you for alerting me about many shows that became my favourite. We'll miss you!

Russ came up with the name although, from memory, publicaddress.com was taken, but not the slightly less cool .net.
I maintain that .net is more cool.
-
It’s been about nine years since Russ and I sat in our old kitchen trying to think of names for a website that could house a new version of Hard News.
Imagine how cool a name you'd have come up with if you'd been sat in that sparkly new kitchen!

Agreed. .Net has always been about networks and communities. .Com suggests taking money off people.

Oops. I think I broke The Listener.

Sorry to see you go, Fiona, but I feel your pain, my own blog has about 3 posts on it, all claiming that I will get around to making some more soon. I hope the Listener site does well.

Is there a curse involving writing about television on Public Address? It’s sad to see the end of Radiation, but is Muse also headed for a similar fate – it hasn’t been updated in almost a month!
I really enjoyed Radiation at its best – smart, fun writing about the telly. It’s a medium that so many people have conflicted emotions over, so it’s always good when someone can write well about the telly they love. Thanks for the good words, Fiona.

Are they running it on an old Pentium 3 out the back of Joanne Black's place?

Creative constipation and neurotic self-criticism are two flavours that do not go together; especially with some serious dental work and the only holiday I'm going to get this year (it's pretty bad form to vanish to your host's spare room and blow out their broadband cap).
-
Very sorry to see you go, Fiona, from here. But as you say, you've been a very busy person working on other stuff, which will very much benefit your public.
-
I echo Jo's sadface. Who will tell me what I want to watch?

With Net Nanny and the OneNewsNow filter installed? The memory requirements must be insane.

new, fancy, 21st-century website, with actual things to read
... as long as you want to read about houses. (I wish it were otherwise, but: See cover story. Again.)
-
BIG sadface. I was always excited when there was a new Radiation post. It was my safe 'nattering on about shows that everyone with "taste" scorns me for watching' place!
-
I shall sadface too. Sadface.
(I wish it were otherwise, but: See cover story. Again.)
Yeah, wanna picture how their 'gosh we're all still renovating our houses' cover went down in Christchurch?
I think I broke The Listener.
I thought that was... oh, you mean the website.

Better or worse than the disaster porn?

Dude, I haven't seen anything that makes it look as bad as it is. Consider: no-one has been able to remove food from the CBD for six weeks. When we get back in there, we'll have to battle rats, street by street. The only thing that's going to drown out the smell of rotting fish is if we do actually flood the sewerage ponds, which is looking quite likely.

OMFG so it's just like Libya?
-
:(
Hope the new ventures work out. Like many here, I'm ambivalent about the listener, for sure. But if I could just read the columnists I like, in full, rss-ed and on time? That would be a win! -

Oh, totally. I'm surprised the Red Zone isn't constantly besieged by film directors, honestly.

And Nattō air strikes?
All the best Fiona. Seems I might have missed most of your work, as I came in after a certain Tennis injury, but will look to the Listener...

That was what our studio director told me in week one, after he'd been down directing live coverage:
September earthquake: Not actually as bad as it looked on the telly.
February earthquake: Way, way, way worse than you can see on the telly.
-
Bad food jokes aside, the CD video footage of the red zone made it look uncomprehendingly bad enough, from what I saw. And the ongoing sagas people are having with ECNZ and their discrepancy with insurers, builders and plain human decency would be driving good people to the brink of... well to the brink.

I always enjoy your writing, Fiona, wherever it resides.

Go well, Fiona. The website looks like ... hey, it looks like a website rather than a concrete-block wall.
Love your work.
