how the US military signed up a mentally challenged youth despite his parents objections but alas my googling skills are not great and all I got was this (albeit shocking - 17 y.o. lured with promise of X-box)
i have a friend who served in the Chemical Corps of the US Army in Vietnam, one of the first drafts. when he'ds finished his tour he was offered a brand new Corvette Stingray and promotion to Sergeant if he would do another tour. he declined the offer.

ok. lunchtime.
for those of you with time to indulge in recreational chemicals [glances at merc], here's something to really fuel paranoia.
watch it long enough... patterns will emerge

merc,
No, the scene is very important to AP. The California surfer is way out at the last bridge with Willard, he goes walking around in the dark, everyone is totally freaked out and most on drugs, he stumbles into a bunker, Jimi is playing (Machine Gun, I think), another soldier aims a rifle at his head, he blanches, the soldier shotguns him..."out here on the perimiter we is all stoned, immaculate" Jim Morrison.

merc,
Nah Che, nevermore, after a time you can slip into The Second Attention without assistance and drugs make for bad poetry.
-
let me have my conspiracy theories... dammit.
-
merc,
Look I'm may be a lacy sleeved sweating alabastor wrist glued to temple poet but there's some things that I just won't wear...I would wear a smock though, see other thread.

that same friend once recalled to me an incident he witnessed from his armoured flame thrower, when a junior officer's vehicle was getting close to being over-run by VC. the guy panicked and abandoned his crew, running back toward the rest of the unit. the senior officer opened fire on him as he ran towards them.

ah well. i always relied on the path of the arrow myself.
better revelation, less stone-overs, no fancy outfits.
-
merc,
Ah but does the arrow ever reach it's destination?
-
no, but it travels a very straight path
-
Ah but does the arrow ever reach it's destination?
of course. it pierces and reveals the gods-head.
thus granting knowledge, but only if sought without selfishness.

All together now to the tune of What a Friend We have in Jesus:
You're assuming we know the tune of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus"?!
-
It is enough that the arowheads fit the wound they make.
- Franz Kafka (maybe) -

You're assuming we know the tune of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus"?!merely saying the words out loud will dredge the tune out of the deepest darkest depths of your memeory (presuming you're over 30 and ever went to church/watched The Waltons, as a child)
-
For some reason, the first tune I thought of was "we don't need another hero".
-
the first tune I thought of was "we don't need another hero".
which made me think of "holding out for a hero"
-
merely saying the words out loud will dredge the tune out of the deepest darkest depths of your memeory (presuming you're over 30 and ever went to church/watched The Waltons, as a child)
'Fraid not. Over 30, but managed a relatively a-religious upbringing, the closest I've been to the Waltons was working with a guy who reckoned he was related to the family that the Waltons was based on.
Can you hum a few bars for us? -
Those who don't know 'What a friend we have in Jesus", could try Pink Floyd's "We dont need no education".
-
Can you hum a few bars for us?
Sure, no problem ....
... there, did that bring it back for you? -
who reckoned he was related to the family that the Waltons was based on
Arcane trivia time - the Hamners (or possibly the Hanmers).
Earl Hamner Jr, born on Hamner Mountain (Earl Boy). Became a novelist & screenwriter with only one story in him. Most famous film is Spencer's Mountain, with Henry Fonda as Clay Snr, & James MacArthur as Clay Boy.
Later had another (the one & the same) idea which became the Waltons.
-
the Hamners (or possibly the Hanmers).
Which blows his story - his surname was (and probably still is) Walling, and he alleged the mountain was Walling Mountain, but changed to Walton to be more TVmatic (the small screen version of cinematic).
-
Isn't 'What a friend we have in Jesus' the song that's sung at the start of Heavenly Creatures?
-
merc,
It was interesting to see how The Waltons stacked up against Pukemanu.

Who knows, maybe it was Walling Mountain, but Earl Boy's novel was autobiographical, maybe his mum was a Walling?
-
merc,
What do you think she was walling, a wonder wall?
