Apparently, there's going to be nudity in The Hobbit.
Actually, of course there isn't, but AE just won't say it's trying pursue an industry-wide agreement via one high-profile production.
Whose idiot strategy is this? They refused to even meet the relevant industry body, but they want a meeting with PJ to set down conditions that are clearly meant to apply to everyone else in the industry. He's absolutely right -- he can't meet with them this basis. The kind of conditions he can and will offer on his movie would break local producers.
This is appalling.

nudity issues are negotiated via ones agent, there's no possible or desirable way to have a collective agreement.
But the NZ union look like they want to own this. I think Jennifer Ward-Lealand is opertating outside her skill set but the CTU have been giving very poor advice - and they are operating within their skill set.

That's a simple matter of fact. Matter of opinion: I find it hard to take seriously anyone speaking on behalf of a union in public who is fuzzy on the difference between the now defunct Employment Contracts and Employment Relations Acts. (BTW, the latter is still on the statute books.)

Hi Craig:
a) Please don't try to take me seriously if you find it difficult. I'm quite relaxed either way.
b) I haven't been speaking on behalf of a union. Only about my own experiences. Many of us do that on this blog.
c) Did I say the ECA hadn't been repealed? I thought I said that they're putting it back together again and more. The big differences between the ECA and the ERA were that the ERA recognised unions, unions had slightly easier access to their members and good faith bargaining was brought in (a kind of voluntary honesty box). Now National, in its first term, has made it possible to sack a worker without cause in the first 90 days of employment and is working presently to make union access to workplaces much more difficult - heading right back there, to 1991. -

Hey, a looong time ago I think I worked with him (at Tv1).
We both had these weird surnames that werent pronounced as they were spelt...The problem with my words appropos Peter Jackson is the word 'we',
right?For me, for my whanau, for all people I know, that *is* the fact - *we* percieve him as doing nothing for the ANZ film industry (because we have very little contact with people who work in the ANZ film industry) and all we hear about/read about, is the grandiose self-indulgence.
If I hurt Jonathon King, I apologise - I know, especially & particularly, how slighting words can cut, when addressed to matters of your art work. I was unaware that "Black Sheep" had done well here (I'm not a fan of horror flicks, and nor is any of my whanau - o, except for some of the nevvies & grand-nevvies, but that's kind of expected eh? And *none* of them mentioned it. And 2 of them are ANZ film fans.)
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what happens.
The mere thought of Gerry Brownlee 'suggesting' a course of action is a true worry.

So I take it that the problem for actors is that they don't join up to SAG or one of its associate organisations, then they risk being black-listed from future projects.
Then isn't the obvious answer that a group of rogue, scab actors band together to work in non-approved SAG movies made outside the US. More cost effective projects attractive to the big studios like Warner, and which will be given to rogue producers like Jackson. The more "scabs", the more talent available to choose from.
And once a year, catch up with the SAG team at the Oscars.

NZ Equity's membership is estimated at between 100 and 200 people. In less than 24 hours more than 500 people have signed this petition asking them to call off this international boycott.
Equity say they are a democratic organisation; they say they are in support of workers. Will they acknowledge the voices of their brothers and sisters who work in the film industry who will be affected (some devastatingly, certainly more than the actors will -- given how long crew work on a film compared to actors in smaller roles) if this film is jeopardised?
