LANEWAYS was great - drinks token things are lame as heck though. Practically everyone in our tour party ended up with left over tokens at the end of the night. If cash handling is the problem then why not just have mobile eftpos? Eftpos is a high functioning universal technology in this country and when festivals don't use it annoys me to the core.
The 3Ds ruled, The xx were impressive. The Dirty Three were shamans of glory.
FLAGS - I wish we could have on flag that represented Maori and everyone else. I hate our flag. Its boring. I think 'tino' has comes with too much baggage. I personally would have no problem with it being our national flag, but a lot of people would.
MusicHy.pe - I'm a bit confused about this website. In saying that I downloaded the Mint Chick stems and I'm looking forward to messing with their shit. It makes sense to me that The Mint Chicks would be looking to new post Warners ways of getting their music out. For one thing they are natural innovators and for another their record label has been sold for a second time...but this time without them. Its quite a weird situation. -

I'm quite happy that there are more alternatives to frigging iTunes. Not everyone is happy with Mr Jobs attempting to control their computer or their devices. We might bitch about Microsoft, but at least they don't try and sneak software on (Safari) that is completely unrelated to the functionality of the actual software you want to use. (Let's not talk about compulsory IE bundling with the Windows!)
Also, frankly, a BIG chunk of binary code to pay for and download bloody songs from the Internet? How ridiculous.
Finally, add me to the brave and the few who Don't Get It in terms of Akka Dakka or any other metal group. I like a couple of Black Sabbath songs, and one Metallica song where they don't actually sing. For some reason, though, nearly all of my partners have been rock chicks. Well, they've all been mostly femme too - obviously I like people who aren't too much like me (I wouldn't complain if a femme-type electronica fan threw herself at me - I'm sure they exist somewhere).

As I pointed out on Dub dot dash, I believe the the journo didn't hear me correctly in the phone interview - I said that signed artists only make a few cents per download, not two cents. Most signed artists are lucky to see 8-15 cents per iTunes download, and that sucks.
MusicHy.pe is not offering "record deals" to bands, we're offering a platform service for bands and fans to interact. We're running competitions to remix and cover songs (which are released under Creative Commons sa-by-nc-nz licenses), as well as make music videos and t-shirts. The whole point is to enable bands to interact directly with their fans without people getting in the way who want to control the means of production, licensing, or distribution. Net result: bands can build better fan communities who want to contribute to and support the bands they love. Directly.
Of course MusicHy.pe is a business and we need to make money, but we only want to make money where we're adding significant value, and we're not trying to control anything or anybody.

I do not see why copyright should be transferable. The rights should belong to the creator and to the creator's heirs, for a reasonable time. They should not be a commodity.
There's hundreds of instances of people writing songs and then selling them to someone else to do the performance. We want people to be able to do that. Not every great song writer is a great performer.
Being able to trade copyrights like shares seems bizarre however.

RE: Laneway. I was in a bad mood anyway, the line-up was ace, but britomart must be the single worst venue for an outdoor gig ever conceived; wind tunnel & echo chamber; and there was no space to just sit. Maybe if they'd predicted the obvious problems with trying to overlap bands, they could've just put the two stages together at one end, BDO style, & had more empty space that was clear from stage/audience, thoroughfare & food queues, and that would've been much more pleasant; especially if they'd been able to provide some kind of extra seating. I felt like a fucken hobo sitting on the asphalt. Also, I thought it was pretty weird to need a couple of security guards whose sole job appeared to be trying to convince people to stop standing on the britomart skylights.
Food (don't get me started on the "burger" I had): they'd made it explicit in the FAQs that there would be substantial food, including vegetarian options, but I thought those options were pretty bloody sparse. Then I got a lovely belgian waffle on a paper plate with plastic cutlery, but the only place I could find to eat it without making a big mess of myself & my paper plate was on the ground. See "fucken hobo", above. Again, maybe by adjusting their floor plan they could've fit in a couple of extra caravans as well as some tables (that is, if space was the determining factor for their lack of food options).
I couldn't for the life of me grok the liquor voucher thing; apparently it turned out to be the swiz it seemed, so I'm thankful I didn't bother.
I'm perfectly ok with the idea that every festival's going to have teething problems, but I think someone didn't anticipate the extra work that'd be needed to make it a pleasant, workable space. Compare it to gigs at Albert park or Myers park - I just find them a whole lot less claustrophobic.
That said, I seem to be the only person complaining about the echo chamber & the poor use of space & sitting on the asphalt, so it's possible I was just in a worse mood than even I realised.

Yeah, she'll probably get more traction if she has a reasonable idea of the design and size she wants (for one thing, size affects how long she should book).
Trouble is it is addictive when there is minimal feeling on my left side. :)
Trust me, I've got good feeling on both sides and it's still addictive. ;) You know you've got a habit when the last thing you do before you leave the tattooist is book the next session. Good luck with the sleeve - how far down have you gone so far?

Totally dude, adding value is 100% where its at in terms of digital music now surely and I am definitely in to alternatives to iTunes.

As have I although I have most gaps filled now. But the bad news for we 'spotters is that what you could pick up for a dollar or two a year or three back are now heading towards the $20 mark as the label becomes very collectable. I guess this list won't help that upward spiral.
I bought things like the Gremlin's Blast Off and Sitting In The Park for cents in the 1990s. I've also caused a fuss amongst collectors because I have a copy of The Human Instinct's Hustler 7" which collector's chatter said didn't exist (I bought mine new in a Record / Hi Fi shop in Glen Innes circa '75). Never issued I was told...uhh, yes it was.
KInda fun getting all obsessive-like over this and I'm loving the slow re-awakening in interest in NZ's musical legacy and pre-history (from a 2010 perspective).
