Street Chant beat the Naked and Famous in their year and have an endlessly-awaited debut album coming.
*ahem* Street Chant's debut album Means was released in 2010, the same year they won the Critics Choice Prize. It's their follow-up album that they're being slack-arses about (though last year's EP Isthmus of One Thousand Lovers was brilliant).
The Billboard listicle is interesting. Lorde wasn't really part of any Auckland music scene, so it's not the same as, say, the Seattle explosion of the '90s, where a bunch of bands who all knew each other were getting attention.
But I think there'll be Lorde-alikes thrust into the world of pop this year - though not necessarily New Zealanders. There'll be minimalist production, gothy teen singers, girls with long curly hair - and maybe even all three in one person!
There will be Bush to Lorde's Nirvana.

As much as it'd be wonderful to see all kinds of executive jets at Auckland airport and the Kings Arms littered with the expense claims of A&R agents worldwide the fact is as Simon says and Robyn reiterates that whilst we may see plenty of Lorde imitators (winning formula repeated until cashflow stops) but they won't be selected from a geographic point, its a style thing.
That isn't to say some/many local acts may not benefit from the exposure and success of Lorde, one hopes. She certainly has piut NZ on the map for many millions of music fans - that alone carries potential benefits for our artists
The most obvious beneficiaries will be those that can ride the coat-tails: Lorde's management team and that of Joel himself and his management (cue Broods) - those whom now have doors wide (opportunities) open in key places. Success breeds success at a business level

But she did emerge from, as Pete Johnston, father of Eddie, put it here, a "peer group" -- albeit one that wasn't particularly visible to outsiders. It wasn't like she was all alone. That mixtape gives a good snapshot of who those people are. They're not all in Auckland, but I think there's a certain sensibility uniting them.

I haven't seen Simon MacLaren perform since Loves Ugly Children days so was keen to go anyway, but the chances of my attending the gig just increased markedly. -
There's a whole heap of young Dunedin bands that deserve to be noticed by the big boys in the US, too. Trick Mammoth, Astro Children, Males, Not From Space, Space Bats Attack, Strange Harvest, Opposite Sex ,etc, etc...

I'll just leavethis here -- apply as required. But isn't it wonderful that Odd Future can get their visas cancelled considerably more quickly than we can extradite an actual convicted child rapist to face similar charges in Australia.
Jesus, there are days I'd like to just stop being a human being and start welcoming our new cockroach overlords.

It's called due process, Craig. The details are enbargoed, so you and I don't know why the extradition (which doesn't automatically require ministerial sign-off in the case of Australia) is delayed. Might be a very good reason.

I found the mods and rockers story interesting. I do not remember many mods in NZ in the late 60s, however there were many confrontations between rockers and surfers. there were continuous running battles on the Shore at one stage.
Back in the late 50s we lived in a state house in Cox's Bay (or Cox's Creek as it was then) The house backed onto the reserve and the gangs of bodgies had a circular bike track there. They would carry bike chains as weapons and would race round whacking opposite gang members during the races.The reserve was built on landfill and the tipping carried on until the 70s. I laugh about all that expensive housing on the edge of the landfill.There were no environmental restrictions on what could be dumped in those days and I am sure it is still leeching out. Mind you we used to make corrugated iron canoes at the base of the tip and cut ourselves frequently with no ill effect. -

Thank you, Paul. Any other memories of this kind are warmly welcomed. One of the great things about Audioculture is that telling one story brings out another.
As regards mods, I think they were strong in Christchurch. The first I heard of the Stagedoor club was in the early 80s, from former Christchurch Star rock writer Rob White telling me about going there in the 60s and playing in one of the bands, the Cuban Heels.

They’re a bit more than that – and can I make one thing perfectly clear. I’m not Whale Oil. I totally support the strict and extensive suppression orders surrounding the details of McGrath’s alleged sexual offenses against children in Australia, and he’s perfectly entitled to exhaust all his legal appeal options here.
But Immigration’s decision to void Odd Future’s visas was done with considerably more dispatch, and the more I read about it, on rather dodgy grounds. Should the Rolling Stones be worried about their April 5th concert in Auckland – after all, their management’s spectacular failure of judgement when hiring security for a concert at the Altamont Freeway arguably resulted in a man’s death.

Oh, I don't know. It says right there in the story how this one time they climbed on top of the shop and ran from roof to roof. I don't know about you, but I don't want some fscking rapper jumping around on my roof like some Batman causing mayhem and riot in my backyard.
